what do you mean by "transgender"? the classical stereotypical chick with a dick?

I know a girl whose into football and sports which makes her a tomboy, does that mean she is "transgender". She doesn't call herself a transgender, she sees herself as a girl, or woman, or young adult.

The core issues is gender roles are assigned to sex. I.E. boys aren't suppose to cry, girls suppose to be sweet, etc, etc.

I know one gender queer, she's a pre-op, going from female to male (I suppose I should refer to her as "him"). I also "knew" (as in we knew people in common but didn't know each other) a post op male to female. I can't say much about her, though, since I didn't know her very well.

Georgie, the female to male, is very nice. I had no idea he was female until he told me. That to me is transgender. Living your life as the gender you are most comfortable being. I don't think of drag queens/kings as so much transgender, it's more about being one sex trapped in the body of another, and making changes in your life to accomodate that, be it a sex change, or living the gender lifestyle you feel you are.

It could be. That's just my experience so far with people I think of as transgender. If you could provide more clarification that would be apprceciated.

Transgender and transsexual are not the same. If you break down the two words, gender and sex are two different things. Gender is considered with the mental, emotional, and psychological identifcation with maleness or femaleness. Sex is the biological identification associated with male or female as determined by external genitalia.

Transsexual means that the person feels they were born into the wrong body. Sexual reassignment surgery (a.k.a. sex change) is used as a way to change the body to match what is felt internally.

Transgender means that the person feels that their gender and identity does not conform to social norms. Therefore, a person may feel like or identify as a male while the physical characteristics are distinctly female. However, that person may not choose to have sexual reassignment surgery, because he feels that acceptance within the self is more important than the gender-body conformity.

Ok, that's pretty much what I meant, as far as identifying as a certain gender. I apologize for lumping sex change in with gender identification.
Question: are transvestites transgender?

No, tranvestites are people who have sexual fantasies or fetishes associated with wearing clothing of the opposite sex.

O-oh, ok. Good to know, you may have saved me from a future faux pas.

Every time I see the subject matter on some TV news show, I wonder why people would have a hard time dealing with a transsexual person.

People get all weirded-out.

What I wonder, and it's probably been debated here already, is how gay and lesbian got lumped in with transsexual and transgender issues.
