Hello, are any of you in any combat specialty in the army? (11x, 18x, ranger, etc.) Was wondering if you see many asian americans, or any minority for that matter in the US army. Wanting to become a soldier is daunting when faced with the prospect of most combat specialty personnel coming from the midwest/deep south or texas.

Not combat, but I've been thinking about moving to the States, getting citizenship, and joining the JAG Corps for the experience.

Actually, I think the JAG Corps is present in every branch of the service. I think. But even it it is the Navy, I don't mind. I love ships!

Back on topic if you're looking for combat experiance then the Army or Marines is the place to go. Personally I love being in the Air Force even though I'm not crazy about my particular job right now.

I've always been curious, how do the citizens of other countries treat military from the U.S.? They welcome you with open arms, do they treat you a little less congenial, or does it depend? If you've been to more than one country, I mean.

JAG is Army, Navy, and Air Force (no Marine JAG). I interviewed with the Army version not too long ago.

Mike, I'm pretty sure you have to be a US Citizen to be in JAG.

Yeah. I've been flirting with the idea of moving to the US and getting citizenship just for this opportunity. Then again, being a US citizen could have an effect on any UN aspirations (e.g. being taken out of the "neutral and/or non-threatening third party nation" requirement for some UN positions.) Something to think about in any case.

It depends on what part of the country you are. What your mission is all sorts of factors come into play. You can be in one town and they like you and the next hates your guts.

I've seen protest in Japan right across from the bas, but those are always peaceful.

The same thing happened in Germany. The nationals held signs protesting the bombings a few years ago. There was no violence, though.

I've never been to a base in hostile territory, but other host countries' citizens we're generally nice.

I almost went to Navy OCS right after college, but ended up in grad school, where I still am today (pursuing a PhD in economics). I think I made the right decision, but often I wonder what my career would look like if had chosen otherwise. Oddly enough, my entire Navy dream was inspired in part by this Asian American navy dude I ended up talking with randomly at Whitlow's bar in Arlington, VA. I think having a military background is also a good way for Asian Americans to get into politics, since it gives us more more credibility. Unfair, but true.

The ultimate reason why I didn't go into the military at the time (three years ago) was because AT THE TIME I didn't feel like I would attain a real sense of mission in the military, since at the time, we weren't in any real military engagements. I'm sceptical about our involvement in Iraq today, but I would have liked to contribute to our peacekeeping and humanitarian efforts in Afghanistan. And in retrospect, I think I would have wanted to go into the marines rather than the navy. Oh well, it's a moot point now.

I have little experience in the Army (8 years) and am a Captain getting ready to take company command here in Iraq. The soldiers are great to work with and I am proud of each and every one of them, except for the female who took two craps in our shower. Life is pretty spartan and we miss all of the luxuries of home, like running water.

The Air Force has a very comfortable lifestyle, but I don't hold that against them (pussies), the Navy hangs out miles off of the shore away from any threat, but they will get their combat patch. The Marines pretty much left months ago. Just us Army guys making the mission happen.

Every MOS is a combat specialty over here. Logistic personnel are taking the heaviest casualties due to ambushes and IED's. The news doesn't portray the reality of life here (go figure).

Good luck. If you ever have any questions about the boards of being an officer feel free to ask me. I have sat on the boards and been an officer for a couple of years.
