I just recently got the PS2 Online attachment and am looking for a game that would be fun to play utilizing the online capabilities, of course.

In the past I've enjoyed racing games, but am open to any types.

Any recommendations?

I'm starting to feel like an idiot for supporting my gamecube as far as online capability goes. Two years and they have one game that can be used online, and the other ones can only be accessed if you download a program from a website to fool the system into thinking it's being played online. Who wants to sell me their x-box?

Well it's the same pace as all other MMORPG's. It's an acquired taste that takes a pretty large time commitment. It's not out yet for PS2, but it is out for PC right now.

I've been waiting for Gran Turismo Online...it was supposed to come out last quarter, but who knows now? I loved GT 2 and 3 though.

Maybe I'll pick up SOCOM.

The upcoming GT4 will incorporate the online gaming -- they're not going to do a re-release of an existing version with the online component.

It's not too far off, I don't think. They already released partial versions for sale in Japan and Europe (basically demos of the game). It seems that they're mostly fine-tuning at this point, with most of the developmental heavy-lifting out of the way.

I read an interview with the lead designer last night and the interviewer brought up the topic of what the designers might do to discourage unrealistically reckless driving -- e.g. using other cars as shields to careen through corners.

I do that all the frigging time versus the computer, but that would be a real damper on online play. So they're batting around various ideas such as suspending people's licenses for "impolite" driving and such.

Sooner or later, they should really bite the bullet and build in good damage modeling.

There's your barbie doll...this thing cost me 900 bucks on ebay, so don't break anything. And are you sure there's no nekkid code? The new Dead or Alive online version will get someone to hack some kinda bizzare code, I'm sure.

By damage modeling, do you mean showing the damage done to your car as in a dented fender? If so, a while back I read that the developers we're trying to get permission to do so. Some of the car manufacturers didn't like the idea of their cars getting beat up like that. Without support from all of the licenses, the GT developers didn't want to make it so only, say, half of the cars register damage. So, they just nixed the idea completely. Maybe, with enough pressure, the car companies will give. Maybe.

In Grand Prix Legends (for PC), the damage modeling is as close to real life as it gets.

You so much as touch anything while driving, and you get suspension damage. It can end your race right there. Wheels can come off, cars can flip, engines can over-rev and blow. Even if you don't lose parts of the front/rear airfoils, if you screw up your alignment enough you may not even be able to turn a certain direction.

It's the best racing game I've ever played, and it was out years ago. You have to actually race the car and make an effort not to touch anybody else. Nowadays, racing games are all arcade mode and have no real damage modeling whatsoever.

Sure. Maybe HH when she gets back too.

I haven't played it since I couldn't find a fun server (like 2 weeks after SoU came out). I think I'd be happier with a group of people I know.
