Even though the CG team WETA worked on the Lord of the Rings movies, I doubt even they could do justice to something this ambitious. Never mind that the storyline for this thing is too complex to turn into a 3+ hour movie, and don't even be concerned with the fact that the challenge of re-creating the universe of the anime would cost them...as another thread would say, ONE TRILLION DOLLARS!!!!

Evangelion is one of my favorite animes . . .

With that being said, I think this is gonna suck hardcore. Not the robots, but the story, and how you know it's just basically Man v.s. Aliens.

You know they'll do away with the metaphysical philosophy and the ideologies in the original anime. And I'm sure character development (which is the REAL draw of Eva.) will be minimal.

*grumbles* This movie is Evangelion only in name. GRR.

You notice in that link I posted that the majority of complaints were that most of the characters were gonna be cast as caucasian as opposed to japanese...though ain't it cool news is basically a bunch of fanboys, so the mainstream might not care either way, sadly.

And the fact that James Cameron is still trying to get Battle Angel Alita off the ground ain't exactly helping matters. That's what he says he wants to direct next, but if he thought Titantic was a hard ass movie to make, well....

You know after they get done with all the comic books and cartoons on this side of the ocean, they gotta move overseas  ...they know anime has a mainstream fanbase over here as of late, so they gots to milk it.

Rob Cohen's Live-Action Kite Moving Forward Source: The Hollywood Reporter Tuesday, January 20, 2004

Anant Singh's Distant Horizon is moving forward with Kite, director Rob Cohen's live-action adaptation of the Japanese anime cult classic from Yasuomi Umetsu, by hiring screenwriter Kamran Pasha to write the screenplay.

The Hollywood Reporter says the new version, which will be toned down to exclude some of the graphic adult situations in the original, is being produced by Cohen along with Singh and Distant Horizon's Brian Cox.

The original film centers on a young woman named Sawa who is taken off the streets after the murder of her parents by a Svengali-like detective. The man, who employs homeless children to do his dirty work, forces her to kill his chosen targets until she is able to break free of his control.

Man, they just do NOT wanna quit.

Most likely if any of the lead characters is asian, most likely they'll get a female asian actress at most. The rest will be token asians.

They won't even bother with token Asians.

Akira will be renamed Aaron.

I didn't like Evangelion much. 26 episodes just to give us the message that life can suck and that people are flawed. I coulda told you that from the beginning ^^

I can kinda see this working as a hollywood movie, since it's basically a modern setting and there is not deep philosophical metaphors or what-not in Kite. (Although those hentai scenes were kinda disturbing.) This might turn out... "OK" in my opinon. Oh well.

They risk alienating fans by not going all out with a rated R version and they lose out on extra box office by not making it a PG-13 blockbuster type. But which one will be the lesser of two evils?
