ugh... i'm not a fan of her, but at least she has some balls.
she wrote about it in her blog (http://margaretcho.net/blog/):
1/14/2004
Stupid People
I think there is a shitstorm brewing (http://margaretcho.com/attacks_from_the_right.htm), and it kind of went my way a bit, but I was in the studio recording my new record, so I missed the downpour.
What I can see is that there are really stupid people in this country and then when you point out how stupid they are, they get fucking mad as fuck. But since they so dumb, they can only start saying things about me being fat, or Chinese, which is cool, but I don't really think that I am either of those things. I would love to go back to my country, but I am already in my country, so how can I go back? I will try, but it is hard to be in two places at one time, especially when the two places are actually one place. It is all good. Everyone needs to have their ignant opinion about shit.
If you think I am a pig, then enjoy that. Think of me when you want to fry up some bacon, carve a honey baked ham - try a ring of pineapple. delicious!!! Carpe diem. You got one life to live and Ryan's Hope and All My Children. If telling me that I am a slanty eyed hole makes you smile, then I hope that you have a super day.
If you say to me that I am an ugly, fat whore, God bless you. I love that you are doing what you want with your little, itty, bitty, teeny, tiny life. I embrace you with my fat whore arms, but don't forget, I want my money up front. I am looking at you lovingly with my chinky eyes.
If you actually believe I am stupid, well, surprise! I am even dumber than you will ever know, so take some satisfaction in that, because you really know how to party because you are super smart. You are so smart you think that this blog is about you.
Whatever is said about me, I know that it is true, wonderful and I love it because you know what? I am being talked about. Thought about. Brought about. I am all about. I love you with all of my heart.
I am sorry I can't write so much today. Like I said, I am in the studio. I am an artist and shit. My new rhymes are chewing up the scenery just like Bubblicious, I don't restrain, can't complain because I am that delicious. I am laying down tracks for my new album with my posse. I live the dream of free speech, beautiful home and my thug family. My job is to tell the truth, and that is what I get to do every day in different and varied ways.
But the truth hurts the dumb, and it isn't my fault, but some are trying to get to me by using their unrelated, unimpressive insults. What they don't realize is that I am untouchable, because I have been hurt so much in my life, nothing hurts me anymore. I have been so rejected that I have come to expect it. I have learned to love that which is meant to harm me, so that I can stand in the way of those who are less strong. I can take the bullets for those who aren't able to. I am a warrior, hard as fuck. None of the hate directed at the honesty I am all about impressed me. They all need to take some lessons in pain and suffering. I thought that their attempts were adorable and I just love them all the more. It is so cute when racist, stoooooopid, right wing windbag cowards try to diss. They don't know shit.
I want to hug them all.

She came out to the Star Plaza Theatre a couple years back out here in northwest Indiana on her tour, and I had planned to go check her out because I had seen her specials on comedy central a few times. Thing was sold out almost instantly so I wasn't able to go check her out. She was doing an autograph signing at the nearby mall, so all I was able to do was like walk past the table she was at and say, "you are cool as hell", and she remarks, "thanks, so are you." In retrospect, I wish I hadn't made such a stupid ass compliment and said more. She's an acquired taste, but she ain't boring.

she did a mini-signing at a theatre in westwood, when "I'm the One that I Want" was there for a one-week run. i got her autograph on a poster. she wasn't particularly friendly. i saw the movie. she's yeah, an acquired taste, not sure if i've acquired the taste. i laughed some, gasped some, and was bored through some of it. *shrug*
those hate emails are disgusting. some were kinda creative with their slurs and insults. i liked her fuck'em-attitude, in her blog. she does have some balls, so i respect her for that.

I guess she is an acquired taste. I have definitely acquired it. Her humour sometimes reminds me of my own -- oh wow that sounded narcisstic.
I have been 'complimented' in being told that I look and act just like her. Maybe that's why I was so upset about the emails.

Well, sure...if you say it in THAT context.
Here's the transcript that spurred on the hatemail:
MARGARET CHO (Comedian) --
* "Despite all of this stupid bullsh-- that the Republican National Committee, or whatever the f--- they call them, that they were saying that they're all angry about how two of these ads were comparing Bush to Hitler? I mean, out of thousands of submissions, they find two. They're like fu--ing looking for Hitler in a hawstack. You now? I mean, George Bush is not Hitler. He would be if he fu--ing applied himself." big, extended applause) "I mean he just isn't."
* "I think this last year has just proven how stupid Republicans are." (big applause -- leads into next bullet)
* "For example, Judge Roy Moore, or Jay Moore or whatever, in Alabama. [inaudible] ... Ten Commandments statue stay in the lobby of a courthouse. 'You can't move the Word of God! You cannot remove the Franklin Mint edition of the Word of God!' [said in Southern accent] People are protesting there and like, I think it could have been solved so much easier if they had just placed a golden calf next to the statue and then people would have started worshipping that. And then they could have moved the Ten Commandments to Bush's office -- which he needs them, desperately. Or maybe he needs a new version of the Ten Commandments -- George W. Bush's Ten Commandments: Thou shalt not steal...votes. (big applause) Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's...country. (big applause) Thou shalt not kill...for oil. (big applause) Thou shalt not take grammar...in vain. (big applause) I mean, whatever fu--ing happened to separation of church and state? I mean, you can't like, impose your god on my god. God has many names. God is God, God is Jehovah, God is Allah, God is Buddah, God is Beyonce. (laughter) You know, you cannot impose your God on other people. And ah, George W. Bush is coming out with the weirdest stance on same-sex marriage as well. What he says about it is, well, 'well, we're all sinners.' No we're not! Just because somebody ate an apple one time does not make us all sinners. And if it was from the tree of knowledge, I think she should have eaten more than one. (laughter) Possibly even baked a pie." (applause) "I don't understand the whole same-sex marriage thing. He was quoted by saying, 'well, you you uh, just gotta take the speck out of your own eye before you take the co-- out of your neighbor's.'" [in Southern accent] (laughter)
* "I mean, I'm afraid of terrorists, but I'm more afraid of the Patriot Act." (big applause)

The stuff that is said is uncalled for, blatantly offensive. If it were hatemail attacking Cho's standpoints, that's fine. But I don't think there is any justification in what she said up there to anything along the lines of "you're a fucking fat pig chink who needs to get blindfolded with dental floss and go back to your own country".
I'm not saying that every white american, every american, every male american or what have you thinks this way... but a vast majority of americans are subjected to a media mainstream that not only promotes this kind of thought (that Asians are foreigners, do not deserve to be in the U.S.ofA., that fat is ugly), but that a vast majority of americans display ignorance towards asians and generalize asians in such a way. (this is the same thing that let's people ask you 'so where are you from' when they see that you are asian).
Not *every* american may spout racist crap, but America, as a cultural entity (with an obvious vocal minority), does nothing to challenge this kind of behaviour.
I certainly will not excuse this as 'just' hatemail. This sentiment is everywhere and it's finally gotten to me. Look at how much resistence the chink's steak movement is receiving, not just in the press, but on various online forums.
I apologize for any overly negative language, over-generalizations or what not but I am having a *bad* race day.

I can understand being angry at the people that wrote this hate mail to Margaret Cho. What they wrote was disgusting, purile, ignorant, hateful, unproductive and you know what? If they had an ounce of integrity or ethics for what they actually believe and what they are condemning her for, they wouldn't behave in such a manner, which is actually counterproductive to what I'm guessing their conservative little goals are. These people are cowards who hide behind the relative anonymity of the internet to vent their pathetic little spleens with impunity.

I never said anything of the sort that would try to persuade you to dismiss this as 'just' hatemail. What I said was that hatemail is worthless crap to begin with. And the thing about hatemail is, that it's targetting a singular person to inflame and anger. What is the thing that would anger many people the most? You attack their heritage, their culture, their place in society. You're supposed to be angered by it. That's the whole purpose of hatemail, and also why it is so wrong.
While I agree wholeheartedly that hatemail is unjust and cowardly and has no place in today's society, I don't agree that it indicates any sort of sentiment of said society. I think that it's important to understand that Margaret Cho's comedy routine (or lack thereof, depending on your preferences) attracted this inflammation. The hatemail was sent to her and her only. So why was it made public? I have my suspicions that someone is trying to grab a spot in the limelight. It's funny that I don't see any other celebrity (regardless of ethnicity) making their hatemail public.
Resistance to the chink's steaks movement is just that. In my opinion, it has absolutely nothing to do with this. I can appreciate your frustration with the recent events that you have been made aware of (and in my own way I feel the same things you do), but I hope you can distinguish what is actually an attack on a specific culture, and what is an attack on a single person.
Short version:
Chink's Steaks movement = a battle against ignorance
Resistance to Chink's Steaks movement = ignorance
Hatemail = an attack on someone meant to anger

Recently, moveon.org (http://www.moveon.org) , a lefty PAC sponsored a political TV ad contest, Bush in 30 seconds (http://www.bushin30seconds.org), which got the righties all hot and bothered. First, when two of the thousand plus entries made the comparison of Bush to Hitler, just about every rightie was in outrage, radio, tv, print, and the net, it was all over the place, despite the fact that there are those who regularly use the phrase "Hitlery Klintoon". But Myself digresses. The winner was selected by a panel of judges which included James Carville, Al Franken, Michael Moore, Russel Simmons, other lefty celebs, and Margaret Cho, who performed at the awards ceremony. Matt Drudge covered this and it was posted in FreeRepublic.com (http://freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1057275/posts#comment) warning: rabid right wingnut site scroll down to see Drudge's post,. Subsequently Margaret has recieved a shitstorm, (http://margaretcho.net/blog/stupidpeople.htm)as she put it, of attacks from rabid freepers, the hatespeech let loose from the protection of the internet is amazing: link (http://www.margaretcho.com/attacks_from_the_right.htm)--

figuratively? like "oh he'll give us a better budget" sorta thing or does he actually check?
figuratively? like "oh he'll give us a better budget" sorta thing or does he actually check?well obviously they can''t and aren't allowed to check, cause it's illegal. but they have this mentality there that promotes arms building (obviously) there. No matter what bush's policys are. Cause in all honesty, these cadets aren't exactly the best and brightest. So it becomes a conditioning that they experience that lasts through out their life.
that's why many army people are repubs....not because they consciously chose it. but because it's almost part of who they were conditioned to be.

Presidential Cockfight (http://www.inthesetimes.com/site/main/article/1387/)
October 22, 2004
By Margaret Cho
It’s such a bizarre and weird time in the world.
This presidential race has become the biggest dick contest in history. “Your dick is indecisive!” “Your dick started an unnecessary war!” “Your dick didn’t get injured enough in Vietnam!” “Your dick didn’t even go to Vietnam!” “Your dick is soft on terrorism!” Has this kind of dick waggling happened before outside of a pro-wrestling context?
It is embarrassing, because you want to believe that our leaders would have some decorum or gentility in the debate to win the most powerful position in the world. It literally is the battle over who gets to be the king of the planet. I want someone with a bit of self control in that position.
Of course, the Republicans started it, so you can’t fault Kerry for joining in. After all, the Democrats could stand to do a little mud-slinging. A lot of mud-slinging would be needed just to catch up.
Then there is the Bush administration trying to keep us in a state of panic all the time, like raising the Terror Alert so that we’re not at ease but always on edge. And it’s always the most ridiculous stuff like, “An ATM was targeted in Midtown Manhattan!”
But I’m so used to raised terror alerts, I’m unaffected. I’m like, “It’s orange. Does that mean I have to take off my shoes?” Meanwhile, clog sales have gone through the roof. People think that it’s Halliburton that’s benefiting from all this; no it’s Birkenstock. It’s a huge clog/mule cartel conspiring. Slip-on shoes are the future.
I would feel a little bit better if George W. Bush could say the word “nuclear” correctly. You’d think that somebody would have said something by now, that Condoleezza Rice would have gotten up in his face, “Fool! It’s ‘nu-clear’. I’m gonna have to write it down for you, make you some flash cards.”
And I’m very worried about the troops, but I’m also worried that my reproductive rights might be taken away from me. And I’m as scared of terrorism as every one else, but I’m also scared that people over here are getting arrested by the F.B.I. and the I.N.S. for having the wrong last name. And I’m so, so sorry that there’s so much starvation in Iraq and so much starvation all over the world, but I am also so, so sorry that there are young girls here starving themselves to death so that they can look like the actresses on TV.
------------------------------
During this election, gay and lesbian activist groups are buckling under the pressure to remain silent about their existence. They haven’t talked about gay marriage and they’re not going to. I accept the fact that John Kerry cannot endorse gay marriage until the election. At this point, I don’t give a shit. Anybody but Bush. Anybody. And when we do get Kerry into office, then we really go for it. Hit ’em where they live. Get all the wedding planners to go on strike.
All the busy-body “Christian” people—when they’re not preparing for the Rapture—are trying to make gay people miserable. I don’t see why our lives affect theirs in the least. They point to us as evidence of Satan in the world. Don’t they realize that Satan is intolerance, that every time they practice injustice, another demon gets his wings?
The Pope recently castigated the media for making gays look normal. Yeah, he’s a real good judge of normal. With the gold dress, and the matching gold hat, living up in the Vatican with 500 men, surrounded by the finest antiques in the world. You go, girl!
But it is the religious right who are fucking scary, because they’re out of control. Even the Satanists are saying, “Wow, you guys are being really mean.”
------------------------------
There is also a war against women, against women’s rights. I was at the March for Women’s Lives in Washington. It was huge. I got there on Friday—the march was on Sunday—and women were already protesting in the streets. I was worried they were going to shoot their wad. But then I remembered that women can protest multiple times. There were lots of people, and great speakers. Gloria Steinem spoke, and Susan Sarandon spoke, and Paris Hilton spoke—“No more wire hangers! Wire hangers make those weird creases in your sweaters!”
I saw Ann Coulter the other day on a show called “Scarborough Country.” I don’t know why Joe Scaraborough is not on Fox. It seems as if he escaped from Fox News and is on a rampage on MSNBC. I guess FOX News started to send out spores and grow shows on other networks. It’s all very conservative, very angry stuff.
So Ann Coulter is on talking about how USA Today fired her because, when covering the Democratic Convention, she wrote, “Here at the Spawn of Satan convention in Boston, conservatives are deploying a series of covert signals to identify one another, much like gay men do. My allies are the ones wearing crosses or American flags.” I’m such a feminist, but every time I looked at Ann I got so angry. I’m like, “You know that’s why women shouldn’t work.”
------------------------------
Another one of my issues is the death penalty. I’m opposed to it, so I write a lot of governors’ letters asking for stays of execution. The other day I had to write, “Dear Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.” And that felt so embarrassing, so frightening. The only thing he’s done so far in office is, let’s see, well, he called Democrats “girly men,” and then he shortened the stay for animals in an animal shelter from six days to three days. That’s so mean! “The kitty must die after three days. The kitty will be terminated after 72 hours. Hasta la vista, kitty.” Of course, the animal activists heard about it and slammed him. Then he was all, “The kitty may live, I’m sorry.” Animal activists are fierce. They are the most terrifying people. I just wish they would start working for human rights. We need them. Desperately. You don’t fuck with vegans. They are mean. They are scary. They are hungry.
------------------------------
When somebody insults me and says I’m fat, or ugly, or not funny, or stupid, or whatever, I can argue with them. But when somebody says something about my race, I feel it, because that’s who I am. And when somebody attacks your sexuality it hurts, because that’s who you are. You can’t change that. Sexuality and race are those central parts of ourselves that we can’t remove or control.
When something hurts me I have to say something. If I don’t it will just burn me up. Living in America as a minority feels like dying of a thousand paper cuts, and I ain’t going out like that.
My favorite activist group was from the ’80s, ACT UP. They had a great slogan, “Silence Equals Death,” which meant that if we don’t talk about AIDS we will die of AIDS. I’ve got a similar slogan for me: “Silence equals nonexistence.”
That makes me a problem dinner guest. At some point during the evening someone will say, “Don’t go there.” Well, I live there. I bought a house there. I’m going to take you there.
I used to feel so weirdly paranoid talking and saying anything negative about the war or George Bush. But I got over it. I was doing a benefit for MoveOn.org in New York, and this was the week that the crazy right-wing conservatives were all angry because MoveOn had been running an ad that compared Bush with Hitler. And I said, “You know, George Bush is not Hitler. He would be if he applied himself, but he’s just lazy!”
I was deluged with hate mail, from the Freerepublic.com site. It wasn’t about political discourse. None of it was: “Ms. Cho, I believe you are being unfair to our administration. Please look again at our foreign policy.” It was: “You Mongolian #### dyke. Four more years! Go back to your country, pig ####. Jesus Saves! Four more years!”
So since I wholeheartedly believe in free speech, I took all of their e-mails and I posted them on my Web site and included their return e-mail addresses. And these people who really like George W. Bush, they’re not that smart. They had e-mailed me from work. Well, I found out there are people out there who really like me, and who are pissed off to begin with. And they just need that much of a reason to go off. So when I had posted all these e-mails, I inadvertenly activated al Gayda. That’s one sleeper cell you do not want to wake up. These queens get up on the wrong side of the bed. They started an al Gayda training camp where they offer Pilates. Soon, the apology emails began flooding in. “I’m sorry! You’re an American. You’re entitled to your opinion. I’m sorry I called you a Mongolian ####. Please make these gay people leave me alone! I’m afraid! Oh god, hurry, I think Cirque du Soleil is warming up on my lawn!”

All ethnic humor aside, and she has no material.

Well, I'm under the impression that most comedians use their emotional baggage as material. Ethnic comics just tend to use their experiences with racism and gender as material. Not finding her funny is just not relating to her experiences. I find her hilarious and I've liked Margaret Cho since I rented "I'm the one that I want."

11/6/2003: The "Fuck It" Diet (http://margaretcho.net/blog/fuckitdiet.htm)
No exercise? Hm. Must be starving herself, then.
I have lost some weight which has set off a strange wave of paranoia among people that I have either had my stomach stapled or shut off with a rubber band, or am on some freaky raw food diet or whatever.
What happened was that I was fucking sick and tired of dieting and working out. I fucking was sick and tired of buying clothes that were too small for me so I could 'thin into them.' I was fucking sick and tired of eating 5 to 7 small meals a day. I was sick and tired of no carbs. I was fucking sick and tired of thinking about food and not thinking about food. I was fucking sick and tired of my trainer and any type of exercise. I went to a nutritionist and I lost a lot - of money. I never left his office without dropping at least a grand on bullshit. Shakes, pills, supplements, food substitutes, exercise programs. I said "FUCKING FUCK THIS FUCK IT FUCK IT SERIOUSLY FUCK IT FUCK IT FUCK IT FUCK FUCK FUCK IT!!!!"
I stopped going to Fred Segal and getting the one thing in the whole store that fit me. I started buying clothes that fucking fit me, like now. I put away all notions of what diets meant to me, what I was supposed to eat and not supposed to eat. I altogether lost the thought process that carried me through my life - my dieting and exercise regimen - and started thinking about the people I loved, hated, tolerated, laughed at, laughed with. There was a lot of time to read. I wanted to watch old movies. I ate a lot of shitty food. I gained some weight and it was scary. But it didn't really make a difference. Fuck it. Fuck it. Fuck it. I stopped exercising, and started writing. I played with my dogs. I looked at shit on Ebay. I started to eat what I wanted - and kept doing it. Not a food vacation - not a respite between diets. I just was going to eat eat eat eat eat eat and fucking eat some more.
Then, I kind of started to get weirdly thinner. I get it now. Because I don't care about food, it is there when I want it, I don't crave it and want it and think about it. Since I can have everything, nothing is that important. I don't need to eat a whole cake because I can eat a whole cake every day every meal if I want and I don't care. I don't prepare to eat because I might be hungry later and 'they' won't have what I have to eat. When I am hungry, I eat. You know, that is what the weird diet is.
Here is what I usually eat every day. In the morning I have a bowl of cereal with two kinds mixed, granola and LIFE. If I am in a hotel, I have granola and yogurt, croissants, one chocolate and one regular and then a big cranberry juice. I drink a lot of water, and a lot of lemonade, regular COKE - no diet anything ever. After that, I usually eat a peanut butter cup or something like that. Then I get to work, which is writing usually, recording sometimes, interviews, etc.. I get hungry later around early afternoon, and so I eat what I think is a good thing at the moment, which could be mac and cheese, or pizza. I eat as much as I want, but it is usually too rich to eat all of it and since I am not dieting and I don't need to cram the forbidden food in before the diet starts up again, I eat as much as I feel good eating and leave the rest. I leave a lot on the plate because I need not clean my plate. Why? I don't have to. And the value of not having to finish all my food, probably has been the biggest contributor to my healing around food. I used to feel like I needed to eat all of it, all and then some, but actually, it doesn't feel good to do that. It doesn't taste good. I can have more when I am hungry again. I eat dinner late, usually with friends. I like appetizers. I will order 3-4 types, so I can have a variety of edible treats, instead of an entrée. If I order entrees, it would be more than one, because I deserve to eat what I like. I never eat leftovers. I never take anything home. I never eat anything that doesn't taste heavenly. I never eat when I am not hungry. I never let myself get too hungry. I never deny myself a fucking thing because I have denied myself enough for 1000 lifetimes and there is no more denial for me in the way that I live. I deserve all the mozzarella sticks, all the fucking chocolate, all the fucking pizza, all the chicken a'la king, and I deserve to leave what I don't finish on the plate.
So there you go. Big secret diet. Love. Love and the audacity to actually waste food.

Everybody famous gets hatemail. Hatemail is exactly what it is, worthless. So what's the big deal that there are racist comments in hatemail now?

She is dumb, her blog suggests it's better being a minority because we can be proud of our race and white people can't. I'll exchange not being able to be proud of being Asian when I have equality in all things. But yeah those racist hate mails suck. But I still think she's dumb.

I admit that I don't really get her or her sense of humor but I read her blog and that's not what I got from it. She starts off by saying that she would like to be white for a short period of time but she points out that when you’re white you can't have white pride b/c you would be perceived as being a white supremacist or something. However, she points out that minorities can have pride in their race and not be viewed as a racist. I'm pretty sure she is well aware of the equality issue but I think it was just a thought she was having. After all, it is a blog.

Apparently she's never been to St. Patrick's Day and Columbus Day celebrations. Or the various Greek and whatnot festivals that go on.
Many White Americans have celebrations and stuff where they show pride in who they are.
Are those seen as racist?
I've heard people gloat about things like being 10% this 50%. . .
I haven't heard of that being viewed as racist, though.
