Fashion models, at least high fashion ones, don't usually look like knockouts in the traditional sense. They more often have really strong bone structure and have different or interesting looks. Models with "commercial" faces are looked down upon because their beauty is too typical or something.

i caught a 3-second shot of her while i was at the gym. she was sans makeup (or maybe sans lots-of-makeup). she's really kind of average. if she was 5'2 instead of 5'9, and still 125, i don't think she'd get a second look.

a lot of the other models looked really average too (again, without the makeup). i know they don't have to be beautiful, but the few that i saw had no interesting look, or incredible bone structure. i think last season's chicks looked better.

I actually think that most of the models in this year's ANTM are not all that great (Keep in mind, I'm saying this as far as models go...).

If y'all caught the first season, I don't think any of the girls are nearly as good looking as Elyse, Adrianne or Shannon. The girls this year are also not as quirky or funny as either Elyse or Adrianne... those two have personality to spare... :biggrin:

Yep, Elyse was also my personal favorite. But, at the same time, I'm glad Adrianne won.

From what I've read, she's actually attending med school. She actually posts on the student doctor's network forum and her posts are usually hilarious! It was really funny, cuz she mentioned in a really old post that she tried out for some reality tv show as a total goof... little did she know...

Later on in the show she said that doesn't identify with either her asian or white side. Maybe she's (as was pointed out to me before) just tired of people bringing up her ethnicity and just want to be viewed as April the model not April the Asian model.

I dunno, Tyra was just letting her know how it is in the fashion biz and that if she made it she would be one of the few (if there are any) asian american models out now and how race plays an important role.

Another one of the judges brought up the fact that she didn't seem to embrace her ethnicity and that she really should.

Below is a quote from a poster on another board. We were discussing the model April and the issue of how she should deal with her ethnicity in the fashion world. Most of the white posters on there didn't see what the big deal was.

This is America, it is a predominantly "white" country and despite the proclaimations of many that they "don't see color" or notice ethnic difference....the proof is in the pudding. When women who are visibly not white get the cover of magazines targeted to white american women, 9 times out of 10 the sales go down for that month. This is partly why the industry is hard pressed to put women of color on their covers. Do the research and count the number of covers featuring nonwhite models over the years in your favorite top fashion magazines. Its not because black and/or latino, asian, etc. are simply not as beautiful. Beauty is a subjective determination. Its because the majority of those buying the fashions, the magazines, and creating those fashions & magazines have a predetermined beauty standard shaped by their own biases.

Tyra has been one of the few featured black faces in a mostly white industry for years. She does know something about race & the fashion industry because she's experienced it. Her commentary matches that of many black women in the industry and also other women of color.

The industry only allows a few slots for all visibly nonwhite (MIXED OR NOT) and April is not white by virtue of the fact that you can see it. It wouldn't matter if she's half or 1/100 asian, her asian heritage is visible in her eyes and complexion. And that is Tyra's point. Those who will be examining April's pictures and making decision on whether to include her in shows, include her in layouts, or place her on a cover will notice her visible asian heritage and it will affect their decision on not only whether to include her but also how she is included. Whiteness is a social construct not simply a biological one (evidenced by the fact that the ability to "pass" plays a key role in who is or isn't considered as white) . April CAN NOT pass for a white girl standing next to the Yoanna's or Catie's of the world. And she will not be able to compete with them on that level. If by "all american" or "classic american" look the industry and majority of white consumers are looking for Yoanna's & Caties - then April will not meet their ideals or standards.

Lamenting "I'm only half asian" and being seemingly upset at being categorized as "just asian" will not change the fact that April is not a white girl. The one drop rule is in affect in this (and other) predominantly white societies for reasons that are far to deep to get into here. April can not pass and IF (cause I don't know) she's sad about that then it speaks volumes. Frankly, I wouldn't want to pass even if I could but I don't have that option so perhaps if I did, I'd be tempted to take the "easier" route.

So, as Tyra appropriately suggested, April better get over the idea of not being accepted as white because of who her mother is - it doesn't carry any weight when it comes to the people who will evaluate her based on her looks. April's looks say she's got something nonwhite in her genetic makeup - she might was well embrace her difference by playing up her ethnicity and hopefully get her foot in the door on that basis. She can not ignore it because others making decision on her appearance WILL NOT. People of color are played like sazon in the fashion industyr - we spice up a bland dish. Words like "exotic" simply buzzwords used to connotate that someone is not white. The big push right now is for sazon of a racially mixed appearance, last year it was nonblack latinas, but the STANDARD will always be the white models because it is a predominantly white country and part of maintaining dominance is promoting your cultural & physical ideals over those unlike yourself.

Oh, she was all huffy over the fact that her boyfriend was going out to the movies without her. Well, seeing as she hooked up with one of the Italian guys, I'd say the boyfriend is in the clear on that count :-)

As waif-ish and high fashion looking as Shandi is, I think the winner will be either Mercedes or Yoanna. I have a feeling Yoanna will win it all. They mentioned that Mercedes has really short legs in an earlier show and everyone seems to like Yoanna's face. Then again... I thought Elyse would win the last one so what do I know :-P

Yay! I'm glad Yoanna won too! My favorite picture of her was the "Audrey Hepburn" photo. She looked AMAZING.

Both girls were really great and I would have been happy with either one winning. In the last one, I really didn't like Shannon all that much (maybe because she was close to Robin, who I really didn't like...) and was glad that Adrianne won. Mercedes and Yoanna were both really nice and seem to have good hearts... I'm sad that Mercedes wasn't rewarded for being so cool... but I have a feeling she'll get a contract anyway. Elyse (the second runner up last year) can be seen in some italian high fashion magazines... she looks really wierd in those high fashion outfits :eek:

Oh on a related note... they are casting for ANTM3 nearby where I live!!! Yep, they are going to be at the Great Mall in California! :smile:

Thought fans of the show might be interested in a brief update... on season 1 finishers Adrianne and Elyse.

Actually, haven't heard much about Adrianne Curry, except for her brief appearance on some UPN sitcoms... one really recently. But show made it seem like she was busy.

Elyse Sewell got signed by Wilhelmina LA. She was at the Meredes Benz Fashion Week LA, in the NAQADA show. Go Elyse!!! I wonder if she deferred med school to do this...

I think there were multiple asian models in this show too. I've rarely see asian models in fashion shows so that was pretty cool too.
