I thought we had this thread already but it could have been a different site.
My professional field is IT, of which I am trying to get out. :frown: My story is that I was passed up for client manager for the reason that 'my technical skills are too valuable to be put in that role.' Supposedly 'the power that be' aka my practice director was intent to groom me as a practice architect, or so he said, which was ok but the highest I can go within the company on that route is CTO. What made mad about the whole thing is I found that the guy who beat me for the job became a hunting buddy w/ my director, the one who made the decison. Perhaps I was not a better man for the job but at least I never chew and spit tobacco juice while facilitating in front of clients. May be it is a regional thing 'cause I see a lot AA IT executives in the west coast and NE, but here in Texas I dont' see too many.
Anyway, that was four years ago. I left that company during the tech boom and did a lil' independent consulting for almost four years. Now I am back working for a Fortune 25 company.

You know, I've experienced this and I've heard this from others as well. What's up with this? What can you do to combat this? It's a little like saying you're a good worker bee but you'll never be management.
