The story of Fighting Fish
Never before in the history of Dutch Cinema has a Dutch film Production company produced a Martial Arts movie. Fighting Fish is the first Martial Arts movie coming from the Netherlands made for a broad audience, featuring a visually attractive lovestory and spectacular martial arts scenes, performed by martial artists, that are true masters of their art and various fighting styles.
The setting is Rotterdam, an international Metropole, where the main character of Fighting Fish, the mysterious stranger A-Ken (Kim Ho Kim) arrives to find out the true facts about the death of his brother, Chau.
Everything looks clear at first, but in the Chinese underworld nothing is what it seems. He embarks on a dangerous journey through gang territory to find his brother's killer, on which he meets several hostile opponents. Furthermore, A-Ken gets entangled in a romance with the beautiful Dutch girl Jennifer (Chantal Janzen), a fact that is not accepted by the people around them..
Fighting Fish is a so-called "Modern Eastern". This eastern version of the Western genre normally plays within an asian setting, but now takes place in Rotterdam, where a modern skyline and scenic locations are available.
About the title "Fighting Fish"
The title refers to the Siamese or Chinese Fighting Fish (in Latin: Betta Splendens). This species is known for its hostile behaviour towards each other. One of the Chinese characters in the movie tells about how the western people look at Chinese people like if they were Fighting Fish: Beautifully Exotic and Gracious, not knowing the true nature of the fish. On one side so beautiful,on the other side so deadly. Just like two Fighting Fish, that can not be together and will not stop fighting until death, the two cultures in the movie can't survive as well. In the end, they will destroy eachother.
The story behind Fighting Fish
About two years ago, director Jamel Aattache and actor /martial artist Kim Ho Kim got the idea to make Fighting Fish. They had just produced a short Martial Arts movie that received a lot of positive commentary, namely "The Good, The Bad, and The Innocent". This film was sold to to several countries. When they had such great feedback, the idea for a feature length movie came up.
Kim Ho Kim, who already had written several scripts, worked for a year on the script of Fighting Fish. After hiring the producers, the right cast was brought together. After Chantal Janzen, Jennifer de Jong and Ron Smoorenburg committed themselves to the project, distributors were approached.
Distributor UIP immediately was very enthusiastic to release the movie in theaters.

usually in Kungfu flicks (specificly HK) arent white girls evil? unless they're with bruce lee (in that case they are good) they are always out to conspire to extort/blowup HK or kill Jackie or whatever

white people are just usually evil in HK kungfu movies, with a few exceptions. one famous example is Cynthia Rothrock. she was in many kungfu movies in the 80s and i think she always played a good person, usually a cop. at least when she became famous. she might have played evil characters before she became famous.
