I suggest you read some white cookbooks. From what I understand, white people eat meat and potatoes. If you feed that to your child, perhaps once or twice a week, it will help him or her understand what it means to be white. They also like boring and bland foods such as macaroni & cheese. Try to remove any variety of flavors from your meals. Perhaps they, in turn, will also become boring and bland.

Since white people generally have nothing to fight for, you could expose your child to substitute causes such as the environment, world peace, or vegetarianism. By letting your child focus on such diversions, they will not think of their racial identity. Perhaps they may even forget.

The goal is to ensure that your child never thinks of him or herself as different or interesting, but of everyone else as different from himself. You'll know you've succeeded when he or she obtains a Thomas Kinkade print. This will soon progress to a coopting of various cultures. Perhaps he or she will coopt yours.

Orphans should be adopted regardless of race, I think. It's disturbing when you think about what must be going through the minds of prospective parents when they're looking for a child to adopt. For the lack of a better comparison, it's like window shopping. "Oh, he's cute, but he's not white/asian/black so it might be awkward later on in life" etc, etc. That is not to say that everyone does this, but I'm quite sure that the thought has crossed many minds before. Couples who cannot conceive children should be equal opportunity adopters (right word to use?)

But anyway, I have something slightly relevant to say. I might be wrong, but I think here in Britain it's illegal to adopt a child of any race if you're not at least partially that race yourself (but maybe anyone can adopt a white baby... I really don't know). I vaguely remember an article in the Guardian or something from a few years ago about a woman who adopted a Chinese baby and was only allowed to because she was 1/4 or 1/8 Chinese or something.

I might have to do a bit of searching to confirm/deny this one.

NotAsian..in the UK, the adopting process is quite complicated and they prefer you to be able to reflect your childs ethnic background, this stems from when alot of mixed and Black children were placed with white families in during the 60'-80's and alot of them, when they got older were very confused/abused and decided it was best for children to be placed with families that reflect their ethnicity....this is a nice idea but there are soooooo many problems with the whold idea.... but anyway euuuuww @ freckles

I don't think it was garden variety troll, probably a white adoptive mother of an Asian child. Although I'm very critical of race politics in transracial adoption, I could see why someone would be upset by our backlash humor directed at the system that involves racist ideals of Asians and Asian culture. They get a certain picture painted by the industry. How often do they come across the honest thoughts of Asian Americans on subjects like this?

They were just bad assumptions that (1) none of us are white and (2) we wouldn't or haven't said things like this directly at the street level.

I was informed that this thread was created after some parents of potential adoptees, requested advice on raising their adopted Asian child. Now I haven't looked for that particular thread myself but I'm willing to bet that there were broad generalizations and such, which probably made an already uncomfortable situation worse. Therefore, this thread serves to ease some of that frustration. I haven’t read everything in this thread, there could have been some things said that were over the top but I’ve probably heard worse on nationally broadcast shows, where comedians have said extremely offensive things about Asians. We are so often told to “take a joke” when we are mocked so can we not do the same? Personally, I don’t take that much issue with racial jokes, as long as I know the intent of the person telling them and also how they are told. I wouldn’t want to live in a world that was completely PC and sterile.

I haven’t read everything in this thread, there could have been some things said that were over the top but I’ve probably heard worse on nationally broadcast shows, where comedians have said extremely offensive things about Asians. We are so often told to “take a joke” when we are mocked so can we not do the same? Personally, I don’t take that much issue with racial jokes, as long as I know the intent of the person telling them and also how they are told. I wouldn’t want to live in a world that was completely PC and sterile.

Parody threads are the best. It's when privelege is flipped on its head that people start taking notice. Anyway, it was bizarre to see posts I made like 2 years ago or so.

The funny thing is, Rice Cracker posted this (http://forums.yellowworld.org/showthread.php?t=17731) several months after our visiting prospective adoptive parent had informed us of the trend. Are we progressive or what?

OK. My wife is "white" and I'm "Japanese". Hmmm, does that mean we can adopt a "White" kid? :biggrin:

The only problem is that I dunno if the kid's Northern or Southern. If the kid's southern, then I have to learn how to feed the kid "grits". :biggrin:
