Big Fish was okay, pretty feel good, and ewan mcgregor is my eye candy. nothing spectacular but i felt it was worth it. if you value going to the theatre for 'really good' movies, rent it. otherwise, if you're a movie buff like me (and don't fall asleep to dramas), you'll feel pretty good about it.

Sucker for Tim Burton, man. Even his little misfires like Planet of the Apes I still supported. His version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will be the one to look out for though...got my boy Johnny "The U.S. is a big rabid dog that needs to be put down" Depp as Willy Wonka.

Don't know...if a huge ass group of people are going to check it out, I may try and meld into their circle so I can't be seen. I'd prefer to check out Big Fish instead.
ooh, i saw Big Fish a few weeks ago. *thumbs up* Not particularly into Tim Burton, and I didn't think I'd like this one (though I'm a Ewan fan), but the film really grew on me as it progressed. The father-son relationship thing made me weepy, especially combined with Eddie Veddar's song at the end.

Really? I like Ewan McGregor a lot and generally like Tim Burton, but the marketing for this movie makes it look boring.

You think Butterfly Effect is gonna be ok? I'm kinda conflicted because it's got two things against it...the Twilight Zone already did that plot decades ago, and Kelso is the star.

I dunno... I think it looks pretty cool, precisely because of the whole twilight zone thing. I was all big into x-files and the outer limits in high school...

i'm just gonna ignore ashton kutcher, maybe he won't be in it that much... *crosses fingers* :)

Has anyone else seen it? Reading Angry Asian Man reminded me of a scene ...

Ewan McGregor goes to communist China, beats up some communists, and befriends some conjoined twin Chinese performer ladies who share a single pair of legs. The twins are (obviously) hypersexualized, and the soldiers all sit silently in a row... a commentary on the government and society, sameness and dictatorial unity. (no fun, even at a 'peep show').

i was kind of stunned during this scene, not laughing during the 'fight scene' while the rest of the (fairly empty) theatre was cracking up.

The nice thing about the movie is that it's a flashback so it's supposed to be surreal, fictionalized, and sensationalized. Everything is just a little too... too...

but at the same time... eh... I wasn't really sure how to react.

for those of you who might have seen this movie, what did you think?

i was kind of confused by that whole thing. i think they were supposed to be in Korea, and it was a Chinese camp or something. because the only time the US fought the Chinese in a war was in the Korean war. and there were some written Korean in that scene. but everybody spoke Mandarin, except for the twins and Ewan McGregor, who spoke Cantonese. it was very confusing to me.

... given the nature of the movie, maybe it wasn't supposed to make sense?

i dunno... at the same time, it wasn't exactly a stellar portrayal of asia.

This is supposed to be Tim Burton's "Forrest Gump"...his Oscar worthy drama type thing. Edward Scissorhands is still my top Burton movie though.

Whoa--did he really say that? Hell, he may end up replacing Viggo Mortenson as the hot lefty actor I'd consider switching teams for.

Sunwu + Kitty, didnt the Mao's "volunteers" enter into North Korea during the war to back em up? still tho yeah i mean i doubt if the audience is going "oh those are the Mao's volunteers that i heard so much about who are different from koreans"

as for what u said kitty, i havent seen it but the way u describe it sounds Kill Billish

well... they didn't explicitly say which war he was serving as part of, and where he was going, or even what he was doing there...

it was kind of incidental. it was mainly to introduce the conjoined twins characters.

i actually reacted less to the asian soldiers than i did to the conjoined twins. when she/they appeared for the first time, i was like...oh gosh, a hypersexualized asian woman. what the hell is this leading to?! but as the story progressed, i realized my assumptions were off-target.

i'm not a history buff at all, so i never questioned whether the military scenes were historically factual or not. i kinda...just went with it. i honestly can't remember much of the fighting, at least nothing out of the ordinary. to me, they were just communist soldiers. anything in particular stand out to you (refresh my memory)?

I haven't seen it yet but would like to. I like Tim Burton's films so this should be entertaining.

Tried to go last night w/ my girlfriend with these free tickets she got from work, and we get there and it turns out they'd been giving out these tickets all over town that were only good for last night at 7:30. So we get there at like 7:02 and it's already full. What's up with that? Anybody else hear about anything like that? and should we bother going back, and paying to see it?

Well, I managed to check this one out over the weekend, and it's number one at the box office, lo and behold. It had some interesting characters and all, but not exactly Mr. Burton's best.

If you've seen the movie Big Fish, what did you think of the Korean war sequence? Did anyone else think it was rather silly and stupid?

I wasn't offended by it but I did think it was stupid: Everyone in the theater was laughing at the exaggerated martial arts of those two Korean soldiers but I thought it was totally lame and unfunny. Another thing that annoyed me were the two cantonese-speaking Chinese sisters who entertained the Korean troops. Did the film makers just totally disregard the differences between Koreans and Chinese? Or did they somehow justify it with a flimsy argument that during the Korean war, China aided North Korea (apparently by sending conjoined singers to entertain their troops)? Either way, it was also lame.

Overall, I thought it was a good movie marred by a poor understanding of history/Asian culture.

I really liked Big Fish. I cried during the last scene (the river one). It made me feel so happy and sad at the same time.

YW reviews yet again influence me to watch a film I would have otherwise ignored. Sounds interesting, I may have to check it out.
