A fire on a Hong Kong subway train may have been caused by arson, according to eyewitnesses.

One carriage was engulfed in smoke as the train arrived in Admiralty station, one of the busiest on Hong Kong's underground network.

Fourteen people were taken to hospital, 10 are in a stable condition and four have been discharged.

Several witnesses said the fire was caused by a man who lit something in a front carriage of the train.

The Hong Kong Fire Department said "suspicious circumstances were detected in the case" and police have been investigating the cause.

The fire created panic in the station as hundreds of rush-hour commuters ran for the exits.

oh shit. Admiralty. that's a busy business district.
although if he really wanted to make a point, he should have done it at one of the important buildings in Admiralty.

Yeah, according to the news, after the train went into the tunnel after TST stop, some guy started screaming at everyone, then he pulled something out of his jacket and lit it on fire, then the lights went out. But seriously, it's a bit overblown. Only 14 people sent to hospital for smoke inhalation, and the big dramatic harm the TV cameras decide to focus on are showing people's bare feet, cuz some of them lost their shoes when they were all running out of the station. And they stopped cross-harbour trains on the Tsuen Wan line until that night, so buses and Tung Chung line were ridiculously packed.

Okay, they arrested a suspect last night, according to Ming Pao. Some 55-year old with burns on his body checked into a Tuen Mun hospital and then the doctor called the cops on him.

didn't read the first word on the heading, half-expected sarin gas or something like that...though this is somewhat disturbing. the question is, what did he light?

Pretty alarming stuff. Lucky HK's MTR has those bum-numbing stainless steel seats ....
