Can't argue with that. That said, I was always in love with Art Adams's work...liked the cleanness of Alan Davis...and the lines of John Byrne will always remind me of a particular time of my life when I made monthly pilgrimages to the comic store on my bike.

Oh, and Geoff Darrow's work on Hard Boiled was fucking sick...as in ill...as in awesome. Totally awesome.

Too many... I haven't read comics in a while though, so not really familiar with many of the newer artists... newer as in post-1996.

Bill Sienkiewicz - He does my favorite Batman. Brings the darkness right out with angular lines, which looked fresh in the 80's and for some reason still looks great now, 20 years later. His inks are as good as his pencils.

Sam Keith - Imaginative imagery (hehe) and nice variations in lines. Form is cartoonish but realistic, giving a nod to the medium but engaging reality enough to make it serious.

Keith Giffen - Okay, you'd think 9 equal panels per page, Hollywood Squares-style is hella boring, but this is the 80's. Liefeld hadn't shattered the possibilities with layouts yet (as confusing as they were). But think about how the same panel layout throughout a whole book, through a whole series, is not actually boring but limiting. He still managed to make it exciting somehow. Dr. Fate and The Heckler were some awesome books. With Malcom Jones III's inks, it was a pleasure to look at.

Jim Lee - Excellent form and proportion, clean and dynamic, everything expected of an action comic book artist, constantly delivering. Man, I had his first X-Men and sold it for $30 back in 1993.

Mike Mignola - What this guy can do with an inkbrush! His pages just say "this is some serious shit," with the weight of his line and use of shadow minus tone. One of the few guys that could make a black and white comic look better than one with fully-processed digital coloring.

Alex Toth - What a beautiful line. Harkens back to some of the old Carl Banks Disney comics, in a way. Comics as comics were.

Chris Ware - How talented can one man be? Depth in storytelling, beautiful imagery, and paper art kits. He had a room at the Whitney last year. That's as "artist" as a comic book artist can get.

Davis & Neary helped me fall in love with Excalibur. John Byrne's Superman is the first one I think of. So much talent out there.

Barron Storey. He doesn't really do traditional storyboard comic line art, but like... ART. If you ever see his stuff, it's just friggin' fantastic. Almost every one of his pieces is like something you'd hang up on a wall. He's done work on the Sandman books, especially in Endless Nights. I've had the pleasure of meeting him in person, and oh man, is the guy ever humble. He's just got fantastic energy, and is a really down to earth person. He teaches at CCA, so that's cool too.

Whilce Portacio... I remember when Jim Lee left X-Men and he took over. It was a satisfying replacement. Excellent work on Iron Man, too. At the time though, I think I was more amazed by the fact that he was Filipino.
