View Full Version : Co-workers that talk to themselves

My co-worker, who happens to be the only person besides me in the office now and for the next week has the terribly annoying habit of talking to himself loudly and constantly. Usually I can ignore it because we're kind of a chatty office, but now that it's just the two of us I'm beginning to lose my patience. He sits at his desk and says in a normal speaking voice words he made up like "That's very abuldandajek," comments about files he's working on and just for kicks he'll blurt out nonsense statements like, "Kim, the Liberian government wants to meet with you." That was funny once. Now he repeats it, over and over and over again. I try very hard to not respond, but today being a Monday and my mood being not so great, I've started saying things like, "That's GREAT!" and "FUCKING COOL!"

I had another co-worker at the last place I worked named Rita. Same problem, only much, much creepier. She would wander the halls muttering things under her breath like, "I'm a good realtor, yes, a good realtor, I sell houses, that's what I do and I'm good at that, yes, a realtor." Or she would make comments about you, under her breath, while conversing with you. This happened all the time. The worst was if you got stuck using the bathroom with her and you had to try to pee while she sat there muttering.

Anyway, I had to get that off my chest. I will now go back to glaring at my co-worker. Maybe I should start muttering under my breath.

The person I work with now I'm pretty sure is sane and mentally capable. I think a part of it may just be him liking the sound of his own voice and the glee he gets from annoying the shit out of me.

As for Rita, she's fucking nuts. Waaaaay too intense, creepy stare and all her clothes were purchased in the 70's.

I guess it's not too terribly annoying as talking about your co-worker behind his back. Do you think he'll do that if you're not there? I hope you feel better.

I've taken to picking my nose and wiggling my finger at him. He gets so grossed out he shuts his eyes and ignores me for a good 15 minutes.

There is this one guy I've met who even laughs with himself.

I guess everyone chuckles with themselves now and again, but this guy has a loud, creepy, high-pitched laugh.

His talks aren't loud, but he talks to himself, nontheless. . .In a Southern accent!

I have nothing against Southern accents, but dude doesn't speak with an accent unless he is talking to himself.

He doesn't just think to himself aloud, but he actually has long conversations with himself. . .Debates. . .Occasionally interrupted by that squeal of a laugh.

These are usually about the social issues of the day, but sometimes about sports, too.

Nothing worth laughing about.

It sounds like he is speaking on a phone or something and as if he gives his alternate a chance to speak before stating his point of view or breaking out in that ridiculous laugher. But, sometimes he sounds rude, as if he is interrupting his verbal sparing partner when he breaks out with his, "Hey, ya'll better hang on now," "Hey, hey, hey," or, "That ain't right."

At first I was a bit freaked by this, thinking the guy may have been speaking to humorous people invisible to myself.

I've learnt to ignore him, though.

This guy and Rita could be soul mates.

hahah.... i used to have a supervisor during my internship with a systems administrator, and he's on the computer a lot talking shiet to his computer. it's pretty funny to me...not too much of an annoyance. I sit near him. So, sometimes, i turn around b/c i'd think he's talking to me, but i just brush it off.

people who talk to themselves just like to hear their own voices. tell him his voice sounds nasty...or somehow hint that it does. see if that'll work.

i don't like it when co workers
slam on the keyboard when they

it makes me want to take my stapler

I wish. She already accused me of cursing her out and throwing things.

In that case try poison. She'll never speak again.

Your story reminds me of this woman I had to sit across from at our corporate office. I think deep down she just really believed that everyone in the office wanted to hear her scream at her clients or whine to her husband. There is no other explanation for why she would talk at full volume with her door open. Eventually my officemate complained and the skrut started closing her door for phonecalls. Thinking about her makes me mad. I remember one conversation that went something like, "BLAH BLAH, IT'S NOT MY FAULT YOU PISSED YOUR MONEY AWAY, BLAH BLAH, DON'T COME BITCHING TO ME." I was like, nice. Professional. I'm sure the person meeting clients in the conference room really appreciates that.

In dealing with annoying peeps how about tripping and spilling coffee or diet pepsi down their back and shoulders. Apologize by saying 'oops sorry, must've been that steak I had last night and now the mad cow disease is beginning to kick in'. Another method in dealing with jerks is to cough ::cough cough fuck you asshole! cough cough::

i just found myself doing this.

actually, when i'm proofreading my memos or briefs before turning them in, i like reading them aloud just once. it's easier to catch errors that way. for me at least. esp. if you've been staring at the damn thing for two days straight - reading it over in your head won't do much.

but i close the door so people won't think i'm crazy.

doing that while proof reading's not crazy...talking to yourself about everyday events is.

I agree with Tao. Holding a dialogue with yourself about the merits of the memo out loud is crazy, proofreading out loud not so much.

I think outloud. It's not bad enough to send me to Crazyville, population +1, but it's still weird enough for most people.

I don't hold conversations with myself, however. That's just plain nuts.

Rocky is like a life philosophy. If RC says you're good for her, then that's good enough. No need to worry about age difference and stuff like that.

Green_Circle
01-07-2004, 10:18 AM
I see. Then I guess the eyes have it? But consider this, RC is still trying to find her way and she knows not yet what is good for her. Let's try and be a bit more responsible shall we? Sure she's a looker and got game with her but don't let that deter you from all the other hotties here who may have an eye for you but are not as eloquent in getting their message out as say a babe like RC. Matter of fact I'll bet there are lots of young hotties here who are eyeing you right now as we speak. Would it be fair to remove yourself from the pool?

Ok, the shit finally hit the fan. I haven't been in the best of moods lately and today has been worse than most. My processor hadn't shut up for a single minute ALL FUCKING DAY so I ended up screaming, really screaming, at him to stfu because he made some joke about how my computer wasn't going to be fixed because I'm Korean. Definitely not my most professinal moment. I threatened to tell HR about his jokes and told him to shut up at the top of my voice. I feel kind of shitty now :frown:

P.S.

He's been really quiet for a while now. Not even talking to himself.

Yeah, with the track record he has I'm sure he'll start up any time now. Of course, I've never gone so far as to say:

"Hey, maybe you're not aware, but in AMERICA jokes like that are really offensive and one of these days I'm going to tell Kathy (our HR person) and you're going to get in a lot of fucking trouble."
