View Full Version : Real World:San Diego
For those who follow the Real World, the new season in San Diego has a Korean girl named Jamie in the cast.
http://www.mtv.com/onair/realworld/season14/flipbooks/cast/images/jamie_9.jpg
Jamie is a "tell it like it is" young woman of Korean heritage. She is no nonsense and in your face. Jamie was raised by first generation, traditional parents in San Francisco. She works two jobs to pay her tuition, studies hard at school, yet still finds time to party. Jamie's friends feel she does not have the best taste in men. She is very picky when deciding who to spend her time with, but in the end overlooks some huge red flags.
MTV sat down with the Paris cast about their impressions of the new season..
MTV: Here are some pictures of the new San Diego cast. What do you think?
Adam: It's the same as our cast, a bunch of white guys and an Asian girl. Isn't that right?

by the way, did they get her description off some generic Asian girl description? it's like she's the same girl as the past 10,000th Asian girl in popular media.
are there any Asian girls in popular media that doesn't have "traditional parents"? is this a trend that reflects real lives of Asian Americans, or am i the only Asian person in the country to have non-traditional parents?

LOL, it is kinda cliche by now..there's always one asian chick in each of these things...and they always have these strict ass parents that they talk to one of the other cast members about...either an outcast female or a dude they're "secretly" spooning with every night in the bedroom they inexplicably share. Creepy, brotha...creepy.

"She's a funky independant woman who wants to cast off traditions, asian men"
Gosh, it's always the waify Asian girls who seem to have brawled unsuccessfully with a cheap box of hair dye and and eyeline pen. I had heard rumors that MTV was seriously hunting for an Asian male to be part of their upcoming seasons of Real World or Road Rules, but I guess they didn't pick any.

I don't even consider these girls asian simply because they are built into a media stereotype and they find someone that fits the role. Real world is some stupid puerile shit anyways. I've never seen an episode that didn't annoy me on some level. Although I admit I did watch the really old season back when it was in san francisco. Funny how all throughout the show they just basically had white people in a setting like san francisco. Oh and that token asian girl who of course married one of the cast members right after.

Not just Pam (Asian), but also Mohammed (black), Pedro (Latino, gay, HIV+), his boyfriend Shaun (black, gay), and Rachel, whom I always took to be a Latina.
All in all, a pretty balanced cast in my mind.

I mean the city they only visited places with "white" people. It was a white washed san francisco. Watch it sometime I seem to remember a specific aversion towards showing any asians in a primarily asian dominated city.
Kind of like "Pearl harbor" syndrome (the movie) where the entire population was magically white with no hawaiians or ethnic asian descendants.

I wouldn't characterize San Francisco as a "primarily asian dominated city." What were they supposed to do? Go to asian club parties? Hang out in karaoke clubs? Weekly dim sum brunches? Get a job roasting ducks in Chinatown?
I dunno...it's TV and lowbrow TV at that. I don't expect much from it.

I've seen some of this show with my sister and that was enough. It's total crap. The cast members are- a drama queen, the party girl, the whiner, the A&F male model, the naive midwesterner, and a few people to make things exotic- a gay guy, a black person, or an Asian, whatever they feel like. MTV picks people to maximize a) drama, people who will argue with each other over the most insignificant things b) people they think will represent a controversial, yet "cool" segment of the population, like gay people, or minorities.
She's an idiot for going on that show, I have more respect for people on fear factor than on the real world.

Strange how they always go for the asians who are anti-asians and complain about how traditional, strict, and backwards their family and background was.
sick mofos...
Well their choice of Asian women typically don't try and show off their cultural or ethnic identities. Instead, you see only women who all seem to be So-Cal chick (no offense to our YW So-Cal chicks) who play as a white man's object of affection. Unfortunately, they also don't pick Asian girls who really can into the guy's faces about that objectification other than for the sheer MTV melodrama. I'm asking for someone with a social conscience, not a total psycho-bitch (like me).
Oddly enough, one of my friends from Philly actually said that I'd seem like a perfect candidate for the show. I don't know if he meant that I was way to melodramatic or what... In any case, I would never thrust myself into that type of spotlight if I'm just gonna be another token Asian cast member. Essentially, that's what all of these women have been.

i think you'd be right. off the top of my head, at least two of the recent seasons had two black girls in each cast who were half-white, but identified as black. applehead mentioned that MTV seems to value beauty over anything else in recent years. MTV's message seems to be that non-mixed (or not as mixed, you know what i mean) black women, such as those from earlier seasons are not deemed attractive enough for MTV. which sucks.

it's just the reinforcement that plagues not only the caucasian community, but the african american community as well. the lighter the better. MTV is no exception when it comes to sexual exploitation and covert racism.

i actually see it more as MTV's way of showing that they support "diversity". Just like they have "black" women who are actually half-white, and light-skinned. and by not casting asian men (although we have noted that half-asian men have been cast in RR) in any of the 14 seasons, they're probably assuming that the general public won't be receptive to them. it's all about the bottom line. :frown:

... and then we didn't see her again.
... but she's definitely not the ho of the house.

Oh, and the reason why everyone is drama and high-maintenance is 'cuz they're casting younger people. When the show started, most of the cast were in their late twenties. Last night, the kids were early twenties, and the black dude was 19.

I hear you. Because they are casting people who are less "real". What applehead said a few pages back. It's basically dumbed itself down to the quality of shows like "Elimidate". God, yes. The Chicago season has to be the worst of all time, followed closely by the second New York season. Vegas might have been populated by idiots, but at least they were entertaining idiots.
You know what I like way more than Real World or Road Rules? I like the RW/RR Challenge. It's like MTV Reality All-Stars. And by bringing back folks from previous seasons, I don't feel quite so old and lame when I watch that series. Speaking of Rachel, dannng! I don't see why she was sent to the Gauntlet so many times and she kicked butt in every one of them, especially against Irulan with the Deadman's Drop. I really thought Irulan was going to win because of her lighter weight. But I can't help but feel sorry and yet at the same time proud of Rachel, proving herself constantly to the idiots like Adam.

I don't use it quite so harshly. Instead of her face is "buttfucking ugly," I take the phrase to indicate that her face doesn't measure up to her body.

I don't know about that... It would be a big positive to showcase Asia and Asian culture. And if some of the cast members made friends with the locals, that would be cool. But at the same time, you know the cast members are gonna make fun of the culture more than European culture- "YOU SPEAKEE ENGLISH? I DON'T EAT DOG! Hahahaha." And we're looking at it through MTV's eyes, so they're gonna showcase eating with chopsticks, some martial arts, the funny english signs, eating rice and fish, kimonos, monks and temples, that kinda stuff. The white guys that I know tell me teaching English in Asia is the easiest way to get laid on a daily basis. As one put it, "I was getting more ass than a toilet seat." she's shown talking about her problems with the way she looks... but it seemed like it was taken out of context. I think she meant that she feels different because of her ethnicity, but it came out sounding like a lot of self-hate, and that she felt ugly because of her slanted eyes and hair colour.

My take on 1/13's episode:
Wow...Cameran and Robin are quite naive and oblivious. I'm actually glad they got a chance to be on the show because I think Jacquese will actually educate them and make them aware of many issues that african americans go through. I hope they learn something. I also hope they learn something from Jamie. She clearly stated her feelings about being an outcast.
As for Robin, her past was quite unfortunate. No one deserves that. I understand how she can be jaded because of her experience but it's truly unfair to let your steam out on a stranger just because he reminds you of somebody you hate.
So far, out of all the cast members, Jacquese has my utmost respect. I don't think that he represents the "angry black man" at all. He stands proud of who he is and has tremendous respect for himself and his culture and will speak it loud to those who offend him. HOWEVER, what makes him so likeable as well, is that he is so open-minded to different people and all he wants to do is get to know people. He's only 19 but surely acts more mateur than the other roommates.
And "Boom Bazooka Joe"?!!!! BWAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA!

OK, I don't feel so bad about people comparing me to him now  It was kind of strange that both girls just happened to have that exact same mindset, though.

hahahaha. Yeah it's so weird...it's almost as if they lived on a different planet! Stuff were so new to them. Especially Robin just couldn't understand how controversial and upsetting it is to use the "n" word. And it was funny how she exaggerated and said, "What? Is it cuz I'm white?" Duuuuuuuh!!!! (>_<)
Anywho, they're just ignorant. What really matters is that they learn and be educated.
So when Eminem says it, is it as bad?

Hmm....good question. I think it definitely applies to everyone. However, I also think it depends on the situation. If Eminem and his crew both have and know they have mutual respect for each other, maybe they won't find it offensive? I think it depends also on your intention; in the behavior behind it.
I dunno. I personally don't think the word should be used.

Personally, I find Eminem's image offensive in general. Just because he dresses street and raps, doesn't make him black. His white privilege allows him to sell where lots of black rappers cannot (and also makes it seem like his whole homophobia and sexism is important when rappers have been saying offensive things for decades).
but that's just me.

As much as it pains me as a moviegoer to say this, Malibu's Most Wanted actually parodied that type of lifestyle to a tee...don't revoke my film critic license for admitting watching that movie.

s'okay. i saw it too :). film critics have to see the good, the bad and the ugly, and malibu's most wanted definitely falls into the latter category.
there IS one positive to the movie. Whenever the boyfriend pretends to flow (he can be very bad when he's not trying), I can just tell him "I feel like a hot dog and y'all be the bun".
hahahahaha.

Now I dare someone to tell me that's not a classic right there.

Only thing they have going on now is slight racial incidents, one frat boy, and a lesbian kiss in an upcoming show.

Man, that seemed so made up when she told them she was afraid of boats...I was like, if she put that on her application for the show, of course they're gonna have them work on a boat!

LOL! I know!!! I thought it was made up too! But then again, it definitely can be a possibility. Different ppl have different phobias of different things. If it is true, I'm sure MTV set it up that way specifically for a more "interesting" show.

Finally the last episode of RR/RW Gauntlet finished last night and I was so happy to see RR win even though they had more players. But with the obvious factor of Coral getting out because she she's allergic to spiders and got bitten by one, it only helped since RW got a 10 minute penalty for her not completing the mission.

I hate to say it, but I think if the have the teams split by shows next time. The guys will get rid of all the females 1st.

Man, I haven't even been paying attention to the Gauntlet as of late. I've caught a few of the episodes though. I'm over here focused on Real World San Diego now....big Jacquese and Jamie just need to chill in the same bed for a night or two...everyone else is getting their Bazooka Joe on.

Oh I agree. Adam was a prime example of one. You did see though that all of the players on RW were guys with the exception of Coral? Because of that, they were so confident they were going to win. Some of them regretted not voting for Coral to go to the Gauntlet. There's no doubt in my mind that they would have won if she had.

This episode wasn't very eventful. Just them studying for their boating exam in order to get 200 bones in their paychecks. Two of them failed the test, and they passed at the end. All in all, not too exciting.

Yeah it doesn't look that exciting yet. I want to see the episode where Brad and that chick get handcuffed.
