Man, I thought about this recently because I'm in need of a jackpot. I'd take of my debt, get my brothers and some friends all certified to dive, take them on a long world tour dive vacation, set my mom up with a house and brothers up with a trust fund so they can finish college. Donate to a few choice charities and organizations. Set myself up on either coast with a house and vehicle, go back to college to study marine biology. When I finish I'd start a documentary-making marine film crew to make underwater movies for PBS, National Geographic and IMAX.

That's what I would do.

wait, he ditched most of his friends and went underground? Not a good friend.

I would pay some taxes, buy a home, a new suv, buy parents a new home, 2 laptops, 2 desktops and then save it in bank or buy stocks.

Sheeeyit, I'd probably go underground too, if I won.

My friends and family would know how to get a hold of me.

The part they don't tell you about lottery winners is all the people who come out of the woodwork when they hear you've won. Past acquaintances, hoochies, charties, scam artists, business proposals (some not so legit). It wouldn't be a bad idea to lay low for a while.

Oddly, ever since I started working last September, I've been pondering this question rather frequently. First, I would retire. Fuck this, "I'd keep working" bull-shiat. Maybe I'd keep working as an artist or something for kicks. Next, I would lose all my school debt, as well as the debt of my family and possibly my closest friends. Then I'd head over to the old neighborhood where I grew up and repurchase the family home that we were forced sell after my parents got divorced. New homes for each of my immediate family. Of course, I'd have to buy myself a nice car and motorcycle. I've also always wanted to own my own bar so my friends and I would have a place to call our own ("I don't like your attitude, get the fuck out of my establishment! That's right, it's MINE!"). Then it's off to a week-long all expenses paid trip to the island of Ibiza for all my close friends (and their loved ones so AB can tag along). Probably would have to make two separate trips since I don't think all of my friends would necessarily get along. And depending on the return on my investments, I might make this an annual thing. I also would like to put together a summer grant for law students working in the public interest sector serving the API community. What would I do with the rest? Lots of real estate, mostly in the form of income producing properties and various other investments as my financial advisor sees fit. Never will you see me at the high rollers tables in Vegas though...

Alex[/quote:f87472d1aa]

Hurray for Arex! I'm guessing I'm one of your close friends...

I think all of our school debts would probably use up most of your money, though. I think a better plan is to keep it on the d.l. and just split the money with me and your family and forget the rest of people. it's the right thing to do--according to utilitarian principles, b/c my happiness will outweigh all of their combined happiness. :D

i would buy a huge circular high-rise/condo, so that each of my family members, extended included, can have one flat (with their own bedrooms, kitchen, living rooms, etc.). there will be one circular elevator in the middle. the bottom floors will be the main dining room, living room, family/rec room, ballroom, etc. the very top floors will be the indoor gym, tennis court, and pool. there will be an aquarium with tropical fish surrounding the pool, so that we'll always be swimming with the fish...and we will have one cook. who will always eat with us and be part of the family. and a pet white tiger cub.

i would do the same as most of you.

help out my family, buy my parents a big fucking house (that they'd complain that was too much money.. get my dad that corolla he's always wanted).

then i'd help out my friends that have been down since day 1.

uhmm..

wut else? i have no clue. i'd probably get my car repainted. =)

and buy a shitload of condoms. cuz u know a baller be gettin mad sex.
***oops, did i say that out loud?**

lastly, i'd get my ex-gf a shitload of lypo-suction, cuz da bitch needz it. then i'd get her a shrink, her own personal straight jacket, and her own rubber room. preferably on the moon, if not further.

Y'know I think we'd all most likely retire, take care of debt, set up our family and friends.... what I'd like to know is what would be the first completely selfish thing you would do? And buying yourselves houses and cars don't count cuz that's almost a given too.

I'd buy all the instruments that I've always wanted to learn how to play. Drums, piano, keyboards, guitars... Then just be selfish with my time and learn how to play em all.

well either that or buy a ton of art supplies that I always wanted but couldn't afford. like the whole prisma color set of markers and pencils...and really kick ass drafting or animation table.

Buy up two miles of beach land. Kick everybody's asses off it. Get myself a comfy beach chair and sit facing the sea with a cooler full of Singha. All day.

Okay to fine tune my response:

Since driving is one of my passions, I'd have to pick me up a Benz CL55 or 600 for cruising and either a Porsche Turbo or Ferrari 360 Spyder for more spirited driving. Not being able to shed the rice-boy in me, I've always wanted to put together a spectacular show car. I was thinking of making my Prelude into a full-fledged convertible with retractable canvas top by going to that shop in Newport Beach that does those cool one-off convertibles. I think that can be done for less than $30k. Of course, that would amount to a waste of money but since money's not an issue, why the hell not? I think it'd also be pretty tight to get a nice tour bus for road trips with the homies. Then again, I think the sticker on those is a cool $1,000,000 so maybe I'll just do a "Short Bus" conversion for much much less.

Of course, a house by itself is no fun. I'd want something worthy of being on MTV cribs. Therefore, the $50k+ home theater system with luxury theater seating for 15-20 people is a must. I'd also want to put together a nice game room including darts, pool table, air hockey, and various arcade games that I would rotate every now and then so I never get tired of playing. This room would also feature a nice home theater set up for playing console games and no less than four blazingly fast computers and a fast internet connection for network games. Last, but not least, the room would have a mirrored stage with club lighting off to one side with a pole extending to the ceiling in the center for "entertainment" purposes.=)

Other indulgences? I would complete my collection of "Macross: Do You Remember Love" 1/55 Valkyries and build a "Toy" wing to my house where I would showcase all of my favorite toys so people could appreciate them as the functional works of art that they truly are (e.g., Transformers, GI*JOE, Voltron & Macross toys). I'd also put myself through art school and learn to program so I can learn how to work with CGI. I'd also brush up on my scale model building skills. That way I could land me a job in some special effects house just for kicks.

And then there's the pet white tiger cub... I will name him "Boba."

This guy I know from the LA after hours club scene won the fricken lottery recently. I'm not sure if he won the entire thing by himself or if he split it...but it was an $80MM jackpot. Since claiming the prize, him and his brother have pretty much ditched most of their friends and gone underground.

What would you do with that kinda money, which after taxes would be around $36 million...?

I would definitely erase my debt. And the -- if there's any money left afterwards -- erase the debt of my entire family (including extended but excluding the meanies) and also the debt of all of my friends and their families. I wouldn't hand out money for loans to be used for whatever -- I'd only give money specifically for killin debt and it wouldn't have to be repaid.

SunWuKong
08-06-2002, 11:48 PM
first i would invest, and then pay off the debts. rule of the game, always pay yourself first before you pay others.

i would invest in
1) residential and commercial real estate
2) mutual funds (but must seriously shop for a good fund manager because funds are only as good as the manager)
3) stocks for very established companies
4) my own businesses

then i would pay off all debts for myself, my family, and extended family. after that, i would buy a home in my favorite cities in asia. and also one in each of San Fran, NYC, Hawaii.

Arex
08-07-2002, 12:32 AM
First, I'd take the money as cash, just so I could look at it all nicely stacked and wrapped like you see in the movies. I'd be like, "man, look at all that cash...and it's MINE!" Next, I would buy the single largest piece of chocolate that all that money could buy. I imagine that'd be one large piece o' chocolate...

Just kidding. I'd ditch the debt, buy lots of income producing real estate and throw a massive all-expenses-paid party for all my close friends on some tropical island paradise.

I'd buy a spot for myself in Harvard, and if I have enough money left over, I'd buy myself my very own Columbia school. I mean, hey, a Chinese dude's done it before: Columbia's engineering school used to be just "School of Engineering and Applied Sciences" but since late 90's, it;s been "Fu School of Engineering and Applied Sciences." Or at least a department, if it's possible. "Yu Department of Economics." and maybe a Center of Study for the Eugenic Assimilation of the Tibetan and Taiwanese People.

Nah, chills, I can't be TOO lavish because I do need enough left over to get some cryogenic pods for my parents and i, cuz even tho its completely crackpot, once you're dead, you might as well take the chance it works anyway, right? Can't doesn't whether you'r frozen or burned to ashes or buried, except that there's a SLIGHT chance you can hope for an earthly resurrection when you're cryogenically frozen whereas if you're ashes, well, if the Bible's right, then you get resurrected. Otherwise, you're dead.

(so now you know my primary desire: Snobbery Power and fear: death).

I liked how that family in Michigan deal with winning the powerball... they said that they were going to tak eall of the money upfront as opposed to yearly payoffs... but they said that they were not going to touch the money for 90 days, they hired a money management company to give them suggestions on how to spend the money wisely. I would probably do the same in regards to getting everyone out of debt family wise and close friends wise, but I would also hire something like this to help me watch what I spend and make sure that it last for as long as my family name and my extended families name exist.

hmmm 36 million

I don't know about NY or CA, but in my neck of the woods, there are big-ass lottery drawings going on now- $210 million is the jackpot. If you won that kind of money, what would you do? Would you quit your job and live the Paris Hilton-esque jet set life and go partying around the world for the rest of your life? Or continue to do what you've been doing with a few more toys?

First, I'd buy a red 1999 Ferrari F355 Berlinetta with a tubi exhaust system, lease a BMW 645i since the M5 is coming out in a few years, and a Volvo S80 with AWD for the nasty, snowy days or when the fun cars are in the shop.

Then I'd buy a house that could hold my cars, nothing too fancy. No MTV Cribs, just a nice house.

Then I'd get a Patek Phillipe Caltrava

Then I would go for a Ph.D in Physiology or something like that, something purely academic that would be interesting and challenging. I don't want to turn into some idiot airhead trust-fund kid.

Then put the rest of the money into a bank account, some mutual funds and live off the interest.

Yeah, but assuming that I spent a good chunck of the money on real estate and after paying fees to the brokers it's almost the same, plus less risk.

It would make a big difference if I invested a bigger amount of money on index funds, but wit little money on those things, the difference in returns isn't that big

it's just how well the index is doing. there is no "interest rate". an index fund is basically all the stocks that exist in the index. if you own S&P 500, that means you own all the stocks listed under S&P 500. likewise for NASDAQ or any other indices. for the long term, the stock market will always go up, and go up faster than the money market that you money will sit on if it's in a CD.

If i were to win a hefty sum... say, $50 million... first thing I would do:

- TAKE THE ENTIRE WINNING IN ONE LUMP SUM. DEPOSIT FUNDS INTO AN ING ACCOUNT. COLLECT 4% APY. $50 million - 40% tax = $30 million x 4% APY = $1.2 million a year accrued in interest. Live day by day off the accrued interest for the rest of my life ($1.2 million / year is A-OK in my book).

- Buy a car. Nothing flashy, probably a fully loaded Toyota Tacoma. Silver. Financed. Pay it off within 4 years. FICA score shoots through the roof. Thanks.

- Graduate at Berkeley with English. Why not? Already halfway done.

- After a year I deposit my lottery winnings into the ING account, begin to spend within my $1.2 million annual interest yield like a motherfucker. Things to buy? Look below.

- Buy property. Shitloads. Land out in the desert. Acres upon acres. Multiple-tenant buildings in high metropolian areas. Commercial properties? You bet. It would be my hobby. Buy houses for my immediate family members. Benefit from the equity. Everone wins.

- Hopefully by the time I'm 40, I would have either doubled or increased my lottery winnings by 50% through real estate deals. Everyone is happy. Eric is super rich.

- Write full time. Freelance reporter, short stories, novels, the whole bunch.

i'd buy micro lasers for my eyes so i could have heat ray vision. and clone body parts like my liver and lungs so i could become an alcoholic and a chainsmoker then have trouble free transplants. maybe my brain too so i could OD on lsd. that would be a treat.

Kind of fun to think about:)

Most people blow the sum in 5 years.

A good chunk would go to the mortgage. Then again I might just not pay anything on the mortgate since it is such low intrest. Get another rental. Have some serious fun:) Some travel and fine dinning would be involved. Would be tempted to get a Pontiac GTO but the wonderful wife would probaby re-direct me to a Toyota Prius with 60 MPG.

At any rate it is nice to think about it:)

My source was a instructor for a life insurance class. Five years probalby applies to the more common lower winnings.

When you say "blow it all" do you mean they just spend it all, or that they waste it all and have nothing to show for it? 'cause I can easily imagine myself "blowing" one of the "smaller" $7 Million jackpots (in actuality, only about $2.24 Million after taxes if paid in a lump sum) in that timeframe or less. That amount of money, while nice, is really only good for a nice car and either a fat house free and clear or some nice down-payments on a few income producing properties (So. Cali. prices).
