huh? the Asian guy stereotypes I know of are like tries to be a hardass, always travels in packs, wears too much cologne, dressed like he's going clubbing when he's just going to the library, talks in the library instead of studying, etc. and there were lots of them at my university.

Stereotypes by those who've interacted just a tiny bit with asians, yet don't know shit about asians, and think that every asian is into AzNPRidE.

mmmmmmmmm Armenian women ^^
I dunno what it is about them. Maybe it's the Georgian nose. Or maybe it's 'cause they look like exotic white people.
Ok sorry that was out of line.

hmm let me assess that checklist to myself:
Quiet.....well I do tend to be more of a loner....
Not outspoken.....nah....whats the use....people who chatter too much annoy me anyways
Studies hard at school......lol if only that were true....I would be an engineering major if I did that
Shy around ladies.....maybe not shy, but not smooth, which doesn't make up for anything :P
Un-emotional.....well I tend to stay away from drama and other people's business so there is not much to get emotional about...

I go out of my way to avoid the AM stereotype, but fail on two counts:
1) I can't help some of them, and
2) I end up falling into reverse-stereotypes.
For instance.
1a) I'm a CS major.
1b) I go to an Ivy League university. (But not Harvard! Woo!)
1c) I aced my SATs first try.
1d) I have glasses. (Okay, so they're emo glasses [from before I ever heard about emo, bub], but eyewear is eyewear.)
1e) I used to play piano and cello.
1f) I don't know if I'm unemotional. It probably seems like it; I'm good at distracting myself from them when I feel I need to be analytical.
1g) I sometimes need to force myself to be social, and get really quiet when tired.
1h) I play DDR. Oh, the shame. THE SHAME.
2a) I crack perverted jokes and have a potty mouth. I think a lot of Asians do this to break away from the polite-lil'-model-minority thing; I can't tell how much of it is my own sick sense of humor and how much is me presenting a social mask. STEREOTYPING DOES THIS TO YOU, KIDS. SADNESS.
2b) I dress in black, own a leather jacket, have a scarf that never leaves my neck.
2c) I play acoustic guitar and electric bass, which is kind of the rebellious-AzN thing to do once they stop playing violin/viola/cello. And I sing. Badly.
Can't win.
On the plus side!
- I converse equally well with men and women.
- My girlfriend is white. (And when I asked, pissily, if that made a "sell-out," on mm.com, they said no: as an AM dating a WF I'm "empowered." Racist, assumptuous fucks.)
- I'm not actually that smart. Just good at pretending. GO DUMB AZN KIDS!
- I'm a writer. Heh. "Writer." Everyone's a damn writer nowadays. But for real, I try, and I want to make a living off of it.
- Most importantly, I don't breakdance. (But man, if I could get someone to teach me popping and locking, I'd be all the fuck over that.)

Ahaha. I have no idea. I think their explanation was, like, "Since whites occupy a higher social status here, dating a white girl imbues you with that social status." (But with worse spelling.) Of course, when an Asian girl dates a white guy, she's a traitor to her race! Since, you know, people only date for status and all.
But yeah. We could start another thread about this if you want to discuss it further. Don't want to threadjack this one.

I think all this debate on WM/AF has also created new stereotypes on asians.
AMs are bitter, and AFs prefer WMs exclusively.
I once had the pleasure of talking to some white guy at goldsea who came trying to be condescending to AMs by giving us advice on how to hit on women (jackass didn't get a thing right on that), and who kept on claiming that it was natural for AFs to prefer WMs rather than asians or other ethnicities, basing on what his 'girl' (some chinese american girl) told him.
the funny thing is that I saw the same guy trying to do the same thing at MM.com months later. I can tell he spent a lot of time with his 'girl'

(But with worse spelling.) Of course, when an Asian girl dates a white guy, she's a traitor to her race! Since, you know, people only date for status and all.
It's better to think; innocent until he/she is found guilty. Claiming that someone is a sellout just for that fact that he/she is with a non-asian says nothing.
All this pre-emptive judgement creates more anger and bitterness.

Are you discussing my favorite forum, mm.com?
Yes, you are correct, the spelling and grammar would be far, far, worse ;)
The WF love/hate relationship. On the one hand, it is empowering to bag a White chick. OTOH, any White chick openly admits to chasing or wanting to chase Asian guys is an Asiaphiliac pig. WTF logic is that?
(Not to knock everyone there. There are some intelligent posters too.)

Well before my posts get deleted, I should probably stay on topic, as important as my tangent is...
So yeah, I dunno, although I'm not like the exact opposite of the asian male stereotype, I'm pretty darn far off in so many different ways it's not even funny. 10 and 13 apply to me the most strongly. 14 and 15 somewhat apply. The others-- I don't smoke, I don't play musical instruments, I was never in chorus or whatever, I don't drive, I suck at sports, and I wasn't a good student in elementary school (in 5th grade, while my teacher was talking, i was writing stories at my desk and completely not paying attention. :D) I did somewhat become a clown in hs, but not *the* class clown. :)
Anyway-- don't want to start a flame war, but how is that big list of "asian stereotypes" different from say: suburban whites or suburban blacks? i'm sure plenty of suburban whites and blacks try to be gangsta, love cars, have musical talent, think they're the shit at sports esp basketball, whose parents want them to be doctors or lawyers (sorries, you forgot businessmen :-)), and go to very good schools.

2.they drive honda's-yes my latest car is a Honda, the ones before were mercury, ford, oldsmobile, chevy asll beaters all pieces of crap
3.they're into cars-yes, but I thought this is just all guys, I have 1 asian male friend that I regularily hang out with the rest are black white and other minorities I don't know a single one that isn't into cars
4.they race-at every stop light
5.they fix up their cars-only after I break it
6.they're good on the comp-hell no
7.they play games and own at least own 2 different systems-just one and I use it more as a DVD player (owned it 2 years and have only 2 games)
8.plus they all own tekken.. (and the korean guys only play with hworang)

there's more then one set of stereotypes of an asian male/female. often, if find that they are extremes of one another. while the initial post described one of the more 'traditional' generalization of the 'studious, hard working asian,' yours demonstrates the younger, badass, clubbing generation.
regardless, it's still a generalization though albiet a newer one then the traditional description given.

I think the typical asian male stereotype is just that a stereotype, a broad generalization often in a negative connotation. there is nothing wrong with those attributes. Its just the nature of the times for most people to have an outlet of superiority (Especially in western/american culture). Just look at the television shows, The talk shows, and reality shows. People watch them to feel better about themselves, because most of the people on those shows have ugly personalities, or get what they want, etc. and it makes people subconsciously idolize, or judge others. I think the whole question is wrong. It should be why do we care so much what others think about us? What makes us unique?
There is strength in solidarity. Quick story. I had a professor who most people would consider the typical asian, to make a long story short he was a Former Special forces operator (Green beret). Very kind and soft spoken, but once I got to know him there was a deep reservoir of spirit and professionalism. He was about 5'6" and 135 lbs of pure determination. They do some tough sh*t, enough to make any grown man weep for mercy.
Because we fall so heavily under the influence of judgementalism in our case western culture, it is easy for people to maintain the status quo and keep us "inline".
Asians in the past have discovered the secret to life long ago, and it slips by us because it doesnt give us instant gratification. Its the inner spirit, the human spirit that matters most.
In conclusion,
What ever you do, what every you like, f*ck em. In a nice quiet way of course.

Yes ! I am also so whitey and pure

I'm quite sure you meant to say generalizations or stereotypes rather than "attributes" because by saying attributes, those generalizations wouldn't just be generalizations, it'd be true.

Here is my two cent.
I am quiet in class, and I do study hard. Reason:
I am quiet because I don't like to complain or talk about shit I don't care about or relate to. I can't even remeber when was the last time I related to the stuff that white people talk about. I don't watch Friend and I don't shop at the Gap and I don't listen to Mainstream music or punk band. All I care about is my A. That's is going to be there till I am graduate and hopefully get me fucking job. Not the damn teacher or the students. Discussion doesn't teach me shit.
I study hard, because I don't like cleaning shit up for a living. My parent's not rich. So if I don't study hard, what the fuck can I do as an Asian guy with no credential. Nothing.
Unemotional -- I am not fucking gay.
There you a good reply to those fucking stereotypes.
