remember that thing that happened a few years back when some one e-mailed a listserve and threatened all the asians to go back to their own country. the incident happened at uci as i recalled.

i dunno, but this just reminds me of what happened back then. it's just strange to talk to a lot of asians around ucla who don't think racism can happen to them here. i don't know whether they are naive or just ignorant, but things like this just have to have more visibility.

I wouldn't engage the guy. But if this is a closed list, I'd forward the e-mail to the department head and the listserve moderator. He should have been kicked off the list immediately.

This seems like a form of trolling ... I've been on several lists for people of color where trolls have joined and then spouted this kind of crap.

One thing I would note that responding in kind is not always the best answer because you never know how nutty somebody truly is. Threats and racism on e-mail can quickly turn to real-life harassment and violence.

honestly i don't see this as something to get all your panties up in a bunch about. he did say racist things, but it's no different than any other person on the street. racism is everywhere. just deal with it appropriately. Yes, he spammed the whole list, which was just unfortunate. so because of that the guy does need to be banned from that list.

If he was in some position of power or other official responsibility, then i think more real action would have to be taken.

berkeley is a unique place. there is a lot of tolerance there but there is also a lot of extremism. plus it is a huge school so you get all types in a broad spectrum.

I won't get worked up about the email, but I would do something about it. If he is associated with a certain department, I'd report it to the department head or to the school because racism doesn't affect only one person. It affects everyone. No one should tolerate it.

i don't agree with this entirely. study hard, excel... yes. but to stay silent is injustice. it teaches other minorities to just let people insult you and that there is not much you can do about it. I'm not saying to lower oneself to the level of that idiot, but you do need to speak up and take some sort of action. doing nothing just reinforces their false notion that asians are the model, silent, weak minority.

i am 100% for excellence in academics, but the best lessons i learned during college took place outside of the classroom.

I've always noticed that:

1) Many older baby-boomer post-war Jewish and many white liberals actually secretly harbor immense deep-seated anti-Asianism (see collegiate admissions affirmative action and Asian ceiling quotas). They actually resent Asian socioeconomic success and view us as dangerous competitive threats that must be impeded. Best way to do this is to give our rightful slice of the pie to other minorities so it looks like they're HELPING them rather than HURTING us. Great smokescreen. Meanwhile, they must also dramatize their plight to draw mass sympathy for them to justify the special charity, meanwhile continually painting Asians as dog-eating militaristic threats deserving of none. Hence, you'll notice a zero-tolerance policy for anti-Black racism in the media, whereas anti-Asian, anti-Arab (or even anti-white) are far more socially-acceptable or even promoted.

prof fink is right. berkeley is liberal, but not THAT liberal anymore. the majority of the student body is actually quit conservative. the actual city and it's residents can be very liberal and very extreme but that is only a small slice, albeit the most visible.

Getting into Berkely does not mean you had a decent gpa or a decent SAT score. However, those things certainly shouldn't hurt.

A poor student in a poor neighbourhood with poor access to education may be just as 'intelligent' as a rich legacy student, but because of the poor education, they don't score as high on the SATs. Intelligence should really be measured as all about potential, in which case standardized test scores mean dick.

Yeah... I was just going on standard SAT diatribe. It might be precisely designe dto identify smart kids from poor schools, but it doesn't do that very well if rich kids have access to prep schools and poor kids don't.

I dunno... I'd like to see the statistics on that. Many of the kids in COSEP, the aff. action financial aid program here (the only way you can identify the kids who may have been admitted by aff. action) are in a bunch of different departments, including pre-med, engineering, and other stuff. I hardly think that your statement holds true, at least here.
