How's your vision? Do you wear glasses? Contacts, maybe? What do you do if you're near-sighted (you can't see far away) and don't have prescription sunglasses? Is contacts and non-prescription sunglasses the only way? (NO, laser eye treatment is not an option here.. And NO, clip on shade things are not an option, either.) Is there ANY way (while still wearing glasses) not to get those two little marks between your eyes, in the middle of your forehead?

[QUOTE]What do you do if you're near-sighted (you can't see far away) and don't have prescription sunglasses?[QUOTE]

They used to have those prescription glasses that turned into sunglasses when you step into the light. It was an 80's style I think. I think they still have them at some stores/optometrists

Me? I wear contacts/sunglasses.. and if im stuck somewhere with just my eyeglasses I squint

My bf has some like that. I don't particularly want some like those, though. I think my only option IS to get contacts.

So what's the lo down on contact lenses?

contact lenses are great!! i'm sure it's saved legions of asians from looking like eternal and perpetual nerds.

i for one always feel really frumpy when i go out in public in my glasses. even tho i just spent (wasted) money on a new pair that i swore i was going to wear to work and out.

get the disposable two week acuvues. i swear by them. if u've always worn glasses, when u wear ur first pair of contacts, it'll feel like a miracle.

I want multiple pairs of glasses! I only have one pair now, ones I got in March of this year. I'm not sure if my parents would let me get contacts. I robbed them of their $ by buying Gucci glasses. Do you think it's possible to pay for contacts through my optometrist with cash?

There are supposedly exercises that can be done to reduce near-sightedness
Has anyone else heard the same? Has anyone tried them?
I did attend a Learning Annex seminar about this out of curiosity, but don't have any details right now

Some sport-style or wrap-around sunglasses (e.g. Oakley and similar styles) do allow a prescription lens to be clipped on the inside.

But those over-the-top style glasses are goofy looking! I've only seen them in catalogues though, so they might actually be WAY cool or something. I'm not looking to getting new glasses at least until these ones break or something. Haven't had them for even a year. Any clues as to keep your lenses scratch-free?!

So you went to the seminar about it, but you don't have any details about it?

I went to that seminar something like 3 years ago, and the point of that was to get you to pay money to sign up for some program. I didn't do that, and I didn't try the exercises that were mentioned. I don't remember the name of who gave that seminar nor can I think of any sites that have this kind of info. Maybe google can help.

Currently, I wear disposable contact lenses when I work out or go out with my friends. When I study, it depends whatever I'm in the mood to wear, but I've worn either my Modo titanium eye glasses-- love'm btw-- or my contacts. Anyone seen or have Modo? They're super light. So, they don't leave much of an indentation between your eyes. Anyway, my first pair of eye glasses were plastic and orange'ish beige. Oh God they were horrible. ahhaha... I started wearing eye glasses in 6th grade when I noticed that seeing the chalk board became more difficult for me to take notes. Anyway, my Biomedics55 contact lenses are -2.75 in both eyes. Fortunately, I have a friend who's a resident physician in opthalmology, and he gets a free year's worth of contact lenses for free. One day, he just decided to give the contact lenses in my prescription to me b/c he doesn't like wearing contacts. That was very generous of him. :)

I wear both glasses and contacts. When I am lazy or eyes are just tired/irritated, I wear my glasses. Yeah, sometimes I feel kinda icky wearing glasses especially when it's hot and humid, but I don't like to wear contacts too often b/c they make me blink a lot. Does that happen to anyone else? So I guess I mainly wear contacts on "social" occasions.

I wore contacts all through high school. but even then I would usually take them off and switch to glasses as soon as I got back to my place. They got to be too much of a pain, especially when the weather was very dry or very humid. Not to mention they took too long to put on in the morning, and made my eyes look red and tired. But I think the real kicker which finally turned me off to them was when I was in the washroom in this office building just before an interview, all suited up and ready to go, and then i sneezed and they fell off into the toilet. now I just wear glasses.

I first got glasses when I was 20 - during the summer between my junior and senior years in college. For the past 4 years, I've only worn them in class, to watch movies, and for driving at night (near-sighted). The rest of the time, I walk around blind & sometimes drive around blindly during the day time (I'm not really that blind). My eyesight has rapidly declined since starting work - spending 8-12 hours/day staring at the computer screen & sometimes after (Internet/email). I should probably consider contacts, but they seem like such a pain.

The contacts I wear are very snug.... They've never fallen off of me. Which brand do you use? My eye glasses are very light, but I know how it feels to have'm slip on your nose on a humid day. Usually, when I know it's going to be warm, I would wear my contacts.

Just like Janet, I first got glasses in grade 6 when he blackboard and other things got blurry. I looked like a total geek back then, and acted like one too. I wore them for one year, if not less and got rid of them in grade 7. I lasted one year without glasses or contacts, and it was pretty tough because I always had to move up really close or copy off other people. It was hardest when once in a while we had to do tests that were projected onto the white projector thing. That was when I couldn't even see what the test was and I couldn't look at other peoples' paper. I got contacts this year (Focus Dailies) and they're the only way I go. I don't even have glasses anymore because they're broken. They're pretty snug too. They've only fallen out a few times and that's because I like to open my eyes while swimming with contacts and then I rub a lot because chlorine is drying. But never has both of them fallen out. Only one at a time.

I wore acuvue ... my roommate thinks I must have put them on inside out (it's kinda harder to tell with acuvue, you see fine, until you blink and rub your eyes and your contacts stick to the inside of your eyelids you don't realize they're in the wrong way) cuz he saw me running around like crazy that morning with no time to spare for anything.

I have horrible eyesight... i got glasses in grade 6. my dad picked out this HORRIBLE pair of glasses with thick, black rims... OMG I looked AWFUL.

Moral: do NOT let parents pick out your glasses. I was young and foolish. I have been burned.

Get contacts. They are amazing. Glasses give me migraines (as do most things) and if you carry some eyedrops with you, soft contacts won't give you any problems. Occasionally, they'll get dry, especially when you get tired, but generally it's okay. don't wear them for more than six hours a day, or you will start depriving your eyes of oxygen, but it's tempting because you're walking around with perfect vision.

and get disposables. they are better. i'm switching over in january. they are the EXACT same contacts as permanents with a different instruction in the box... and it's good especially if you're new at contacts to have a bunch of extras. Also, since they're the same as permanents, you can wear them longer than two weeks and they'll be fine as long as you take care of them. (i.e. wash them at night, don't screw the lid of the contact case on them and rip them)...

my first glasses were pink metal frames... <_< <_<

but now.. it's become a.. fashion statement for me. i own a couple of pairs of glasses. but i like my brown plastic frames the best. i look like an uber nerd and i love it!

i wore hard contacts because of astigmatism but now they have soft lens for it. contacts are so comfortable. the hard contacts were a bitch.

i really want lasik surgery though. having to wear contacts or glasses are so annoying when i'm engaging in physical activities.

My eyes are literally 2x worse then yours. Mine are -5.50. I wear mainly contacts. Once in a while I'll wear glasses when I'm staying in just to give my eyes a break. I spar a lot in Karate, so contacts make much more sense for me.

I took the medical exam for the NYPD not too long ago and their eyesight requirement is 20/30 corrected, 20/100 uncorrected. I did a lot of squinting and pulling the sides of my face to get an even better squint, but I passed (I think I have latent psychic abilities, cause I'm blind as a bat without contacts).

As of now there isn't anything wrong with laser eye surgery. Other than the small chance your eyesight might get worse or in rare rare incidences where you might go blind.

The x factor is the long term effects of any residual scar tissue due to the laser eye surgery. As of now there isn't any proof or documentation of its effects, because laser eye surgery is still considered a relatively new procedure.

Hanuman
12-12-2002, 02:24 PM
What about Radial Keratonomy? That's been around for a while now, and I don't think there's been any reported negative effects from people who've had this procedure done a while ago. I'd be inclined to think that they'd be less scarring with lazik then with RK. I don't know, I'm still debating whether to do this or not, I'm still real nervous about having someone screw around with something so sensitive as my eyesight.

deez nuts
12-12-2002, 02:52 PM
RK surgery has alot of shortcomings.

1)RK can only correct for a small amount of myopia and not for hyperopia (far sightedness)

2)The procedure itself requires the surgeon to make anywhere between 4-8 incisions in the cornea radially (like magwheels on a bike). The incision itself is fairly deep(around 80-90% into the cornea). This has major fallbacks since as time goes on the structure is unstable and the cornea will sink and lead to increasing hyperopia. They're methods to reduce this by making shorter and less incisions called the midi/mini RK procedure. But it still will lead to weakening of the structure as time goes on.

3)Post op recovery is a bitch. The RK surgery I guess can be called a more invasive procedure for corrective eye surgery.

The PRK (photorefractive keratectomy)came about from the negative effects of RK. But because PRK caused pain in the patient's eye. They used a laser called the excimer laser designed by IBM in the late 1990's now known as LASIK.

RK is rarely used nowadays most surgeons will opt for LASIK for corrective eye surgery.

There are specific excimer lasers approved by the FDA for the LASIK procedure. Make sure it is on the list of FDA approved lasers.

I'm not discouraging anyone from LASIK surgery it's just that most privately run clinics won't tell you that there's not enough information on the effects of long term tissue scarring from LASIK surgery.

But LASIK is the way to go if you want corrective eye surgery done.

I had really bad vision and coke bottle glasses. When I was 18 (1998), I got LASIK surgery done with the new NIDEK laser, just recently approved. I got mine done by the number one optometrist in the nation because they are my eyes dammit and worth it to not go blind. My vision was horrible to the point that I was midjudging the width of doors and running into the door jabs *ouch*.

This was four or five years ago and my vision is still perfect. 20/20 in my left eye and 20/15 in my right. I had astigmatism too and it corrected it. I definitely recommend it. You can always go and do touch ups later too. It's just 50 seconds each eye and then you blink and can see perfectly. The awesome powers of technology....

However, I would suggest anyone to think about why you're doing it. I was on swim team and did a lot of rock climbing and contact sports and contacts made my life hell, always falling out and losing them in water. If you really don't need LASIK, stick with contacts. LASIK is expensive and we haven't had it around for long.

because i heard it gets really dry and blurry and.. stuff.

and did you do this in the states?

iris
12-12-2002, 07:39 PM
Yep, got it done in California by Doctor Gary Kawesh. My eyes did feel dry afterwards, but that's normal. They give you eye drops to put in your eyes five times a day for one week. You also have to wear shades out and wear a protective eye mask when you go to sleep for a week so you don't rub your eyes.

I saw "halos" for a couple months - rings around lights. But that's also normal and it went away. I was only blurry when my eyes were dry and once I put eye drops in, it was fine. Now I don't even need to use eyedrops, but I'm concientious of my eyes so I always wear sunglasses with UV protection out, which you should do even if you haven't had surgery.

I've been wearing glasses since I was 9. My most recent prescription is a bit out of date, but I can still see 20/40 with them on, so I'll keep them a while longer.

I just started wearing RGP lenses in October. I think they're fantastic. It's so much easier to work out and get around. I wish I had gotten them sooner.

The only drawback is that I'm a big napper and need to take them out or risk vascularization of my corneas. Also, people say stuff like "you looked like a real dork with your glasses." That's annoying.

I've been wearing contacts since I was 14 (11 years ago) and I started wearing glasses in 3rd or 4th grade.

My prescription is -7.50 for contacts in both eyes.

I want to get LASIK done, but I'm not even sure that can help me.

Contacts are OK. I wear the 2 week disposables. Its only mildly troublesome.

I have a pair of glasses, but I only wear them at home. Since my script hasn't changed in 5 years, I haven't had to replace them in that time period. They're fashonable, but I just don't like the way I look with prescription glasses. You will always see me wearing sunglasses though, any chance I can.

Well, they're still not absolutely certain how to make the healing process relatively foolproof in LASIK. The success rate for normal LASIK operations is high, but not at the rate of most "nonessential" cosmetic procedures. Until they get all the kinks (like haloing, general failure to correct vision) ironed out, I'm not putting my eyes under the laser.

Otherwise I'd do it in a second.
