if you want to take a walk, go outside. treadmills are for running. i hate it when people make us wait while they stroll on the treadmill. especially if they're young. i can understand older people walking on the treadmill, but if you're 20 and in good health - wth??? run or get off!

I really hate treadmills in general. I think there is absolutely no point to them. If you're gonna pay to go to a gym, why are you gonna pay when you can go running anywhere, except if you live some place with really shitty weather, then I kind of understand. I never use the treadmills when I go to the gym because I can just enjoy a nice run outside.

Same goes for the skanky male instructor with the mullet and the spandex overalls (with no shirt underneath, btw) and the way he thrusts his bulbous crotch at the women in class, the younger the better.

just to be devil's advocate:
-how come *you* can't run outside, since you're so healthy?
- if treadmills were meant to be running only, they wouldn't let you set it at the slow speeds.
- the outside is cold. some ppl like exercising in comfort, for some reason. -
- sometimes ppl want that elevated hill effect that you can't really get anywhere else.
- and maybe he/she has bad knees and can't jog anymore?

i live in the ghetto. i'd be the perfect target for a drive-by if i run outside. i jog in the gym in my apt complex - and even there, we have these security access cards so that outsiders can't come in and kill us.
if they people want comfort, they can walk in the hallways of our apartment complex. our hallways go forever, and they're warm. we can't run there, though, b/c running is noisier than walking and will disturb my neighbors.
our treadmill doesn't have that elevated hill effect. well, it does, but it's broken. everytime you try to set it, the machine freezes.
if he or she has bad knees, he or she can walk in our hallways.

that's not a bad idea actually, but imagine all those walkers walking all day long in the hallways, creating noise. somehow, it'll get to you.
hmm, no hill effect. that sucks.
perhaps you could institute a 30 min time limit on the machines

actually, when i first moved here, i did run on the streets. it's much more interesting than running in the suburbs - the people you pass by, street vendors selling mangos from mexico, random mexican men shouting things in Spanish at you, Mexican women staring at you and wondering why you are running, Korean men and women in the Lexus' wondering why you don't just join a gym.
then one day my apt manager told me to quit running outside b/c it was making him nervous.

Less impact on the joints to walk, and the treadmill has a sort of suspension that makes it easier on the body than hitting pavement.
How do you know they're in good health?
You don't know what health conditions they have that might make them unable to run, just because they look healthy. Kidney problems? Diabetes? Disabilities don't always jump out at you.
They're paying members just like you and have an equal right to access the equipment. Is your name on the treadmill? Didn't think so. If you're running or walking on the treadmill for 30 minutes what does it matter how you spend that 30 minutes on the treadmill? Are you dictating how people should exercise now? You're not a doctor. You're not their doctor. You don't know what they need.
Have you ever thought what it would be like to be disabled or have a health problem? One that no one can see?

Give the fatties a break, it's hard enough for em to get up the balls to go to the gym, much less to put up with crap from people.
Also, power walking is much better for you than running. It's easier on the knees and joints and you're much more likely to go longer. Stamina is better than a quickie when it comes to working out.
But I prefer biking at the park...

I love walking on treadmills.
I love running on treadmills. Unlike on other surfaces, I feel like I can run forever on a treadmill so long as I have somethings to drink.
Running elsewhere, I can be one of the first people to bail out with knee or lower back pain.
On the treadmill, I'm one of those annoying people who don't want to get off.

You know what makes me shake my head? When ladies or out of shape people come in and do curls with 2lbs weights. They don't seem to be exerting any energy lifting those measly weights so whats the point? You aren't going to get any exercise doing that so why come in and take up space? 2lbs? How did you even open the door to the building in the first place??

I've always assumed that they're women who want to get toned arms but who are paranoid about bulking up their arms. Like...paranoid about it, as I have to imagine they could curl 5, 8, or even 10-pound dumbbells without turning into Nicole Bass.

See thats silly. First of all, for men, its extremely hard to gain extra muscle mass even lifting weights regularly. For women its even harder due to the fact that they don't produce as much testosterone as men.

I wanted to buy a treadmill for my apartment, but I just don't have the room. I injured my leg from too much running a while back with a stress fracture. The treadmill would have been perfect for me to rehab it, it's a lot softer on the joints and bones and I can support myself with the railing if I need too. I'm nearly back though, I walked/ran for about a mile and a half today, didn't want to push it too hard, just wanted to see if I can take the pounding. So far so good, except it's like 20 degrees out there, brrrrrrr!

I go on the treadmill for a run after I do my weight routine. Sometimes I need to walk because of a knee injury I sustained a few years ago. Fat people don't bother me, but the smelly ones do. In fact, all smelly people bother me, as I'm sure they do everyone else.

Shit, I hate it when I'm on the treadmill. I detest cardio work, though I've resigned myself to it as a necessity at this point.
I never get around to it, but I really want to go get a TV/DVD combo and stick it on a high stand in front of the treadmill...with movies and a Playstation hooked up, I'd use the treadmill all fucking day long, happy as a clam.

It's probably already been said, but running is not necessarily good for the leg joints. Walking is supposed to be a good alternative.
Sounds like you need to get to the gym, earlier, so you don't have to wait for the fat asses.

I like to run on the treadmills -- only when it's been bad weather for a long stretch. I run on an incline of about 3 to 5 and see if I can do 4 miles in 30 minutes.

What the heck does this have to do with Asian-American rant issues?
Walking on treadmills is good for certain people who want to read their newspaper or read a book while exercising.
There are also places where it's too dangerous to go walking outside (esp. at night) to exercise. In addition, I would NEVER excercise outdoors in Lost Angeles, due to the HORRIBLE air quality. Jogging, running, having sex..whatever...outdoors in lost Angeles is like smoking a pack of cigarette.
If this treadmill-waiting thingy is happening at a gym, and you have membership at 24-hour fitness or Goldgym,...then go to another location where there are hardly any people (though during the Christmas holiday...plenty of people are sheding fat).

kasia, i don't see anywhere where you bashed people that are fat.. however, that's what eventually resulted in this thread. some people have been making such insensitive comments about fat people and it's appalling. no fuckin wonder i feel so damn self-conscious around asians. geezus.
anyhow, i am chubby. i sure as hell hope that when i walk on a treadmill or i'm in the gym, some other moron isn't sitting there judging me. hell, mother fucker.. i'm 100 steps ahead of the obese person sitting on their couch doing nothing. who is anyone to sit there and tell someone they're not pushing themselves and if they can't push themselves, they need to get the fuck out.
as for the walking on treadmills, treadmills are call TREADmills for that reason. you can walk, powerjog, run, or sprint on them. 20 minutes of sprinting is the same as an hour of walking. maybe for someone, like me with messed up knees from playing basketball would rather walk for an hour than risk the chance of damaging my knees further from jogging. i actually heard that jogging was the worse thing for your knees. that either powerwalking or sprinting in short spurts was the best. *shrug*
also, using the excuse that they should walk outside while you get to run/jog on the treadmills inside because you may get shot.. makes no sense. they could get shot too and hell, they're walking.. even easier targets. if it's seriously a problem, talk to the management at the gym and have them make a 20 minutes max or something on treadmills when others are in line to use it.
i understand your post wasn't to diss fat people, but for some people.. that's what it's become. it's really sad because i seriously wonder if any one of you have actually lived a day in the life of a fat person. an overweight person in the gym is by far more commendable than the other large amount of the population that needs to be in the gym working on their bodies but don't.

i agree with you, but you never know where people soft spots are. weight and how overweight people are treated by people happen to be a soft spot for me, having been judged and hated against because of this very issue. i was simply making a point that some were making some very insensitive comments and while it may not easily offend you, but it doesn't mean that you can or should expect that on other people. i mean, you say that you're overweight and you diss overweight people all the time. because you're overweight doesn't make your jokes and "fun" something that won't hurt or offend others, ya know?

i still think my argument is valid b/c it looks a lot less stupid walking around a large complex than running.

I used to go to mine just as it opened, when only a few people were in the cardio-room, and I'd go to the treadmills that would run an hour and not worry about anyone waiting.
