apparently, it's a serotinin uptake inhibitor? or something like that? who can explain how zoloft works in layman's terms, as my biopsych/biochem knowledge is lacking.

zoloft aka sertraline inhibits the neuronal uptake of serotonin. by inhibiting the uptake of serotonin by the neurons, it prevents serotonin from breaking down.
clinical research and trials have shown that patients diagnosed with depression absorb and breakdown serotonin at a faster rate and/or they have a lower level of serotonin.
by taking paxil, zoloft or prozac it helps stabilize their serotonin levels.
edit: serotonin is a neurotransmitter.

so.... if someone takes some zoloft and then some ecstacy, they'd stay in candyland for a long long time?

actually Zoloft and other SRI drugs cancel out the effects of ecstacy. ecstacy causes serotonin release in large amounts, but since SRI drugs inhibit the uptake of serotonin, there is hardly any serotonin to release in the first place.

there's actually two effects on taking MDMA (ecstacy) and SSRI's (prozac, paxil, zoloft). depending on when the drug is taken and how the body metabolizes it.
the first pathway is what you mentioned it cancels each other out and the high is almost nonexistent.
the second pathway can lead to what is called "serotonin syndrome" which can lead to a loss of consciousness due to having too much serotonin in your system.
