Really? I always pegged the typical Asiaphile to have shitty foreign language skills, usually building up what they know to be far more than the reality. If the guy is that fluent in Japanese he may have actually lived there for a while too. Hell, he might be somewhat culturally Japanese if he lived there long enough.

What I find funny about english teachers here in Korea is that a good number of them say that they've come "because they're interested to learn about Korean culture and language" yet their only source of Korean language and culture seem to be Korean women.
Maybe there's a way to learn by osmosis once you stick it in

Probably not, but being around korean women a lot gives you lots of opportunities to practice speaking Korean, just as being around Korean men would.

It's amazing what you'll do for unlimited poon- speak a language, go to Asia and get laid on a daily basis. I have this one friend who mastered the Japanese language, went over there as an English teacher, got a real job, and married a Japanese girl, and now he's back in the states. He lived there for 10 years. Let me tell you something, those English teachers were living like rock stars with groupies- teach, hit on the cute girl in class, take her out, and fuck her. Sex on a daily basis- but the girls were't all that hot. But then he said after awhile it got dull because the girls just saw him as an object. They'd want him because a) they wanted to see what a white guy was like and b) they wanted to be seen with a white guy in public. Let me tell you something, this guy is more Japanese than most Japanese I know. Apart from the language, culturally he's more Japanese- his thinking and everything.
But yeah, a non-Asian speaking a Asian language fluently is always more interesting than a Asian speaking a non-Asian language fluently. I don't know why.

this is kind of true. perhaps you feel that non-asians would have trouble grappling with asian languages, which are linguistically very different from romance/european languages.
asians knowing non-asian languages probably is not a shock because asians in general are expected to conform to the western standard of modernity that they've imposed upon the world since who knows when.

i was in HK and i said that it was really strange to hear some Europeans who grew up there speaking fluent Cantonese. one of my local friends who was there said that for him it's the reverse. he said it was really strange for him to hear a Chinese person speak fluent English.

For me in order to force myself to practice a language, not only do the people I hang out with have to be fluent in that language, they also have to have extremely shitty (or nonexistent) English, otherwise when I become friends with them, I will just be tempted to use English since it would be the quickest and most convenient to get the point across during communication. When you are deciding where to go for dinner or afterwards, the last thing you want to worry about is delays and getting the right grammar.

Depends on how well rounded the person's understanding and experience of Japanese language and culture is. If it's your typical slob whitey glorifying everything Japanese without really understanding shit as the definition of otaku seems to be taking form in the American vernacular, yeah that's pretty Asiaphile in my book. If it's just some white dude that has badass Japanese due to talent, hard work or both that understands quite a bit about Japanese culture and history (including the unsavory as well as the entertaining) who is also an anime fan, then prolly not.
Asiaphile or not, if they have better understanding of my own ancestral language and culture they get a nod of respect from me. Can't see myself getting buddy-buddy with such a person or agreeing with everything he or she does, but I'm not trip over their scholarly abilities.

what if it's just someone who really likes watching cartoons and doesn't give a shit about Japanese culture and doesn't go "I LUV ASIAN GIRLS! I LUV SUSHI!" I mean i like watching anime too (alt i wouldn't consider myself an otaku), but I don't consider myself Japaniphilic because I don't go "I LOVE Japanese culture... that's why I watch anime!" I just like big boobed animated women. geez.
Why can't an otaku just be like a trekkie? why would he or she automatically be labeled an Asiaphile just because they're anime/manga fans? It's like saying someone who's a big fan of Warner Bros cartoons is an Ameriphile.
In other other words, what if a person JUST likes anime and has next to no knowledge of japanese culture, and doesn't even pretend to be interested in such? would such a person still be an Asiaphile or just an otaku?

I think it's been pretty much stated that -philes are attracted superficially or obsessed with cultures that they did NOT grow up in or were not immersed in during upbringing. Hence the ignorance, perpetuation of stereotypes, etc. If someone were to grow up in a certain culture, it would be difficult for them to fetishize it or remain ignorant to the elements of that culture as well as support generalizations.

I think there are different degrees of Otaku. Some are just straight up FREAKS, and others are just normal people who like to watch japanese cartoons. Whatever.
Some of them take it a bit further and go with that weird otaku lifestyle, and buy samurai swords to be like Kenshin, and go out of town to the nearest Tapioca place, and buy Pocky. IF they're that kind of freak, then yes, I'd probably say they're asianphiles, unless they respect the culture than seeing it as a novelty.
Phile = Seeing something as a novelty.

Because trekkies obsessed with Star Trek are not the same as men who are obsessed with asian women (or vice versa) and buy into stereotypes. People who do this not only shit on (and group together) Asian people and all Asian cultures due to reinforcing the idea that the members are submissive (and therefore inferior), they further perpetuate stereotypes about women and reinforce traditional gender roles which naturally marginalize and put women on a lower level of the hierarchy, which at the top lies white protestant heterosexual males. The perpetuation of stereotypes and generalizations has a much bigger effect (not only on the people being objectified, but also the entire group, the culture, and the lives of the members of the group in dominant society) than people who decide to kill themselves cause Wharf or Quark or Captain Kirk got the short end of the stick in the latest episode. I thought this would be pretty damn obvious by now.

ummm obsession with anime =/= obsession with Asian women, especially considering how a lot of Japanese anime girls don't even LOOK Japanese. Also, consider how a huge number of anime are mecha animes, which don't usually feature pretty girls as their main stars.
Like I said-- would you call someone obsessed w/, say transformers, an Ameriphile? if not, then why would someone obsessed w/ Gundam automatically be an Asiaphile?
Stop trying to turn everything into Asiaphilia. please.

That's true. Once in a while you come across a hottie but it's pretty damn rare. And most of the time (at least in my experiences, once again), the hottie is an Asian girl obsessed with Anime, haha Not to further shit on Otakus or anything, but anytime I need a good laugh I can just search the net for Anime convention galleries.

oh well. I mean maybe i'm being a bit too idealistic and theoretical. Maybe people who are blanket otakus, in the sense that they swallow up all and any anime, especially hot-girl anime, and go to conventions dressed up as sailor moon, are all Asiaphiles. But I think there are probably a lot of people who just like particular shows or particular subsets of anime who aren't Asiaphiles. I mean practically every Asian American guy around my age or somewhat younger have gone through a DBZ phase, but most of them aren't rah rah Asia. I also have at least one friend who went through a pretty big anime phase, maybe still watches some anime, but I wouldn't consider him an Asiaphile, either. But then again, as far as I know, he didn't go to anime conventions, and he preferred dubbed over subbed.
Also, it's almost conventional wisdom now to say anime is usually better than American cartoons. There are people who just like to watch cartoons, but not the crap that's spat out Saturday mornings now.

Well yeah...but then they don't count as Anime freaks or Otakus...they're just people who like watching Anime from time to time or are fans of certain shows and don't develop lifelong attachments to Sakura from Bubble Bomb Bash (is that an Anime?) or whatever.

who's imposing what again? colonial era ended a long time before any of us were born, and nowadays everyone who studies English does so by their own choice cuz they wanna sell stuff to nearly half a million rich people in countries like USA, Australia, UK, and New Zealand. There's no evil whitey standing at every street corner in Asia beating people who don't speak English. (Not to mention, up until the modern era the British actually discouraged the colonial subjects from studying English). People who want to are perfectly free to study other foreign languages like Japanese (which plenty of Chinese and Korean people do, since Japan is also a rich country to whom you can sell lots of stuff) or Arabic (especially among non-Arab Muslims). In fact the only people imposing their language and forcing others to learn it and fund the study of it even though they don't want to are national governments whose Ministries/Departments of Education have been hijacked by the interests of one ethnic group at the expense of others.
In general, I think people all over the world are more shocked to hear their fellow nationals/coethnics speaking a foreign language in a seemingly fluent manner, than they are to hear a foreigner speaking their own language fluently. Don't know why it would be ... I guess it's more surprising to see someone assumed to be familiar suddenly become an outsider.

I don't know, but I've noticed that some of the colonial thinking remains around here.
I'm not sure about other asian countries but in Korea you get to see a wide use of caucasian models for a lot of commercial adds. The reason is that people think that if caucasians wear it, then it must be fancy, yet if the product was marketed using local models then people will think that is just a cheap brand. There are some cloth brands that use local models but they're extremely famous actors or singers.
