Why is it that while there is a hella lot of Asian kids that like to indulge in the fruits of Black-American culture, many of them as far as I have seen liveing in 3 different cities throughout N.Y. state and curently in Delaware, don't necesarally like to socialize with blacks. While others for what reasons I have no idea even, (coupled with their O'Fey, White Bread, Chicken Sh.t, racist buddies), hate blacks? I don't know; but it sure seems to me that if you don't like a people, then you wouldn't go out of your way to imitate and partake in their gear, slang, dance, music and attitude. Is it Jealousy, lost identity or just plain good ol stupidity? I don't know, help a brotha out with this one please.

I thought the clothing and music you mention is more American than simply black and since you talk about Asian American youth... they're just part of the American youth culture overall. No? Am I oversimplying this? Could be. I hardly see martial arts as strictly an Asian thing now considering all the McDojos out there. Or using chopsticks.

I think that "black" (slang, rap, etc) became mainstream American culture and is open to any race and is generally accepted. It is stylish to be "black" is another way to put it

Well, I'll put it this way: one would see a much higher ratio of Asian kids at hip-hop concerts than one would see at indie-rock concerts.

So if they like 'black' things they're trying to be black and if they like 'white' things they're trying to be white? Then what are Asian kids supposed to like in order to avoid trying to be something? I never really counted as an Asian youth so sometimes my understanding or experiences don't give me enough perspective.

You could flip it around and ask how come if alot of black people like things asian (tats, movies) why don't they hang out with more asians?

Also I never brought into the dressing "black" or "white" stereotype. i think just because you like a certain thing that may be linked to a certain racial group. That doesn't mean you're trying to BE them. You just like the same stuff.

But I'm sure there are some people who would label me an "Asianphile" also.

I wouldn't go that far. I would just say that Asian American kids do a hefty amount of identifying or at least enjoying black American culture.

Describing when or if one is "trying to be black"...that's kind of messy.

Then what are Asian kids supposed to like in order to avoid trying to be something?
I dunno?

The original poster, like many, needs to some basic lessons in elementary logic. At the very least, he needs to learn that it's possible for some Asians to be a certain way and for other Asians to be another way.

This all reminds me of going to some hip-hop club in Beijing a few summers ago. There were all these teenagers and early-20-somethings that were decked out in oversized basketball jerseys, bandanas, and all that. Of course, there are also all the Japanese kids with their "afuru" hairstyles and George Hamilton tans.

Which is to say that Asian kids, the world over, have a lot in common with white, suburban American kids.

I noticed that most urban wear store owners are asian.

come now. dressing "hip hop" doesn't really automatically denonte commonality.

hey if you generalize about asians, what's the difference between you and those racist "thug" wannabe's?
