I've had scoliosis since I was a kid and lately my back seems to be getting worse with a lot of pain in my tailbone. Nothing much turned up with my primary physician, she just poked at my back and said she doesn't know much about bone issues. She'll give me a referral to a specialist but I'm not sure what type of specialist to see; I also have some old broken and badly mended ribs I'd like to have looked at during the same visit. My back is the biggest problem - do I want to see a chiropractor?

I was diagnosed with mild scoliosis as a child and was told to go to a chiropractor.

Yesterday a boy at school cracked my back. He even took my face in his hand and cracked my neck. It was a little bit frightening. It went "CRAAAAAAAAAACK." Then I layed face down like a scared chicken. "Bok bok bok."

no chiropractor please.
go see an orthopaedist and/or an orthopaedic surgeon
they will examine you and run you through some exercises. take an x-ray or an mri (i prefer the mri since it'll give you all 3 planes. it makes it easier for the surgeon too) to determine the type of curvature. he might just tell you to apply heat, do some corrective exercises, prescribe you some pain and inflammatory meds. it is the conservative route and the results vary. it is possible that doing nothing would be an option too. brace would do very little since you're an adult.
surgery is an option normally for curvatures greater than 50 degrees, mostly in young kids. although it's rare to have spinal correction surgery done on an adult. the pain is in your tailbone it might be lumbar scoliotic curve, i think surgery will be presented to you as an option depending on your pain scale.
if surgery is presented as an option, feel free to give me a shout, if you have questions or just want a second opinion about the procedure. i've done a few spinal correction procedures on adults during my orthopedic surgery and neurosurgery services.
edit: oh yeah if you do opt for surgery do your research on the surgeon. ideally he should have a background in neurosurgery and/or orthopaedic surgery specializing in scoliosis and spine surgery.

i had my neck cracked like that once and it was unexpected. she wasn't certified in anything. looking back at it, i think she could have killed me if she wasn't careful.

I've been told to go to one since I was in the fifth grade, but I've never gone.
I don't even like cracking my fingers, so I want my back left alone.

I injured my back playing basketball and getting hit to the ground and made it worse when I helped lift heavy stuff the next day becuase I was stupid. I did the acupunture with the heat thing, it seemed to do the trick.

uh... thanks, I'll skip. That's for my FIL, not moi.
Though I've thought about giving yoga a try. Stott Pilates is great but I hate the fact that you have to sink a ton of $$ into a machine and training. Maybe I'll take the referral to the orthopaedist or osteopath first and try to get my insurance company to cover physical therapy. Be nice if I could stretch that into more private Pilates instruction.

after my wife gave birth she herniated a disc... I mean she was in pain like you cannot believe... she did this therapy thing called Vax-D... she turned out pretty good and has had no problems since, a lot of doctors are against it, but it worked out....
Chiropractors are first and foremost salesmen.

I've had masseusses do that to me. Then again, I can crack my own neck without even using my hands.
All this cracking is gonna do some long term damage I think.
Knuckles, neck, back, toes, knees, ankles, elbows...

oh god.
I had a lot of back problems due to ballet and gymnastics. I use to go to a chiropractor, but now I just take yoga and pilates.
It really eases the pressure on the back and aligns the spine.
