View Full Version : Consideration of casual use of 'Nazi'

People toss this word around quite a bit. It's been in a few posts lately, and I was wondering if we could consider using other words instead. Perhaps "fascist" or "dictator" could be substituted.

I have to say that casual use of this word sometimes seems to me to be a little disrespectful of those who suffered under the Nazis. I have a friend whose entire family--aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, etc.--was murdered by the Nazis. The enormity of losing your entire family is simply incomprehensible to me.

I feel the same way about the word "rape" used in a business context when people really mean that they got a bad deal.

I personally think that's a good idea. Unfortunately, people are throwing the word around and it's almost become a term to describe the moderators at YW. I don't think it's very justified, but that's a whole other thread...

Ok.... story time folks.

Once upon a time, long long ago, I was in my french class in high school. We were taking french, and a girl in my class was commenting about somebody's treatment towards another, and called them a nazi. Lo and behold, my teacher told her to not call that person a nazi, because to the suprise of said student, our French teacher is a German native. After the war, she described in great detail upon how her family was treated, even though they were living in switzerland at the time. Although her family never supported the german's regime, because she was ethnically german, screams of nazi, and jew killer became prominent in her life, growing up. It was kinda sad, and you can tell she was traumatized by it, because of the tears she was fighting back.

Just be careful upon how you use the word is all. And be aware of the ppl around ya.
