Definitely wait for payment confirmation. Setting up PayPal makes it more convenient for buyers and speeds up the transaction. Taking money orders is a good idea. Accepting checks may be risky if there's an overdraft, and waiting for it to clear is usually slow, combined with taking it to your bank; I wouldn't do it.
Yes, you have to package it yourself. Package the item as professionally as possible. For breakables, use sufficient padding. For firm things, basically immobilize it so it cannot rattle inside. Print a mailing label if possible. Include a packing slip with whatever relevant info you like, most importantly: the item's name, eBay auction ID, the bid price and whatever costs you added, your username, thanks for buying, would appreciate feedback. Factor in shipping supplies when determining how much you'd like to sell the item for, or specify a packaging charge in the listing.
Provide several shipping options, since the buyer will be paying for it anyway (make sure you specify that in the listing). There's Parcel Post, Priority, and Express from the Postal Service, or you can use something like FedEx or UPS. Priority usually gives the best bang for the buck and considering there's a Post Office pretty much everywhere, convenient for you. Consider insurance if you feel like you could get burned. If it's a really expensive item, an escrow service would be a good idea.
Send an email that you shipped the package on X day using (Parcel Post/Priority/whatever) and you would appreciate feedback when they receive it.

What are you sending? You can pad a box with newspapers, or go to OfficeMax or something to get packaging material.
Whatever you do, include pictures in your auction so people can what they're getting and make sure to indicate the item is sold as is and the sale is final
Aiya. Well, okay, you can buy packaging supplies from most office supply stores -- Staples, OfficeMax, whatever. If you can score "free" stuff, even better. I usually recycle my Amazon boxes (turning them inside-out) or make boxes from corrugated cardboard sheets. You can also use the Priority boxes from the Post Office, but legally they can only be used for shipping Priority, and they're not that rigid. Great for shipping VHS tapes, DVDs, CDs though.
Shipping stuff you'll need: Box/Tube/Envelope (depending on what you're sending), clear packing tape, tissue wrap (for scratchables), bubble wrap (for breakables), some cheap extra padding (to prevent shifting and provide impact absorption) such as shredded newspaper (make it yourself) or styrofoam peanuts.
What are you packing?
As for PayPal, if you can avoid linking a bank account to it, try to do so. If you must, create a bank account solely for PayPal, and make sure it's as empty as can be. Giving PayPal (or any third party, for that matter) free reign over a bank account is a bad idea.

You serious? I found such good deals online for second hand items. I got my cambridge soundworks speakers, brand new, never openned in the box for 100 + shipping bux, while it goes for 150 in the stores. If the seller lives around your area you can always email the person and ask to see it in person.
I found my internation economics textbook used for 60 bux on ebay, costs 120 new at my school! Can probably even sell it back for 70-80 bux at textbook buyback time.

Only send it out when you recieved payment (if it was a check make sure it clears before you send it). You have to ship it and package it yourself. Make sure when you send it the item does not break so add bubble wrap, cotton balls, foam, etc. I would also ask the buyer if they want insurance on their item. My friend brought a scale off ebay and it got lost in the mail, lucky he had insurance.
I go to the local post office to ship it out. P.S. if you are sending a book make sure you ask for the book rate, is cheaper then sending it out by the weight.

Put the cd or dvd in it's orginal casing if you still have it. A small cardboard box that fits it is fine, or you can just get some hard construction paper and tape it around if your sure it's not going to ruin the CD.
As for the postage it really depends on what the buyer wants. If he or she paid extra for fast delivery then you should send it fast. This is a useful link
http://postcalc.usps.gov/ I'm pretty sure you can send a small box without much trouble.

The post office has padded envelopes just the right size for CDs and DVDs.

Move the money out. The bank account is there for them to deposit your payments into so they don't have to cut you a check. There's no reason for them to get money from you -- they already take their commission out when the transaction is done.
If you send it Priority (starts at $3.85) the post office can provide you with free boxes that are exactly the right size for them. Ask for Priority boxes for VHS tapes/DVDs/CDs. They have single and double size. Single can hold about three regular-size DVD cases stacked, and double about six stacked and side-by-side. Since it's an exact fit you don't need any extra padding.
Address the package clearly in the center, with your return address in the upper left. Take it to the post office -- they will meter it and apply the postage.

what DOES paypal do with the money when u move it there?
what DOES paypal do with the money when u move it there?
PayPal receives funds from buyers by processing credit cards. You, as a seller, should have no reason to transfer funds to PayPal, since they take their commission fees at the time the buyer's transaction. In theory, all they should do is deposit your payments into your bank account.
But read their
User Agreement (http://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=p/gen/ua/ua-outside).
Section 10 says they can freeze your account for up to 180 days.
Section 11 states the conditions under which they can withhold your funds.
There are some PayPal horror stories out there, and it's something you should be aware of and safeguard against.

ouch good thing i moved it back to the bank again, im still baffled by the whole paypal credit thing, thinking there HASTA be some kinda advantage to it but oh well
so u should be able to "transact" just fine (buy/sell either way) without the credit and stuff right? just let paypal handle the bank transfer?

Alright -- question.
Is it legal for you and your friend to take turns to bid up the price of an item on eBay?

i believe that you have to transfer the money yourself. correct me if i'm wrong; i haven't used it in a while...
and while "legally" speaking in terms of state or federal law price boosting might be ok, i believe there's something in the ebay TOS that might burst your bubble. i've never actually gone through the entire monstrosity though; you're on your own

price manipulation, against eBay's TOS. not sure about the legality of it -- ebay doesn't call itself an auction site but if it's an auction format I think it would still count as fraud. that's a question for the lawyers... prolly depends on jurisdiction... or not... since it would be a Federal thing.

I use the paypal without using the credit card option because they charge a fee if you accept a payment from a credit card.
As for transfers from your bank account to your paypal account, it takes a period of 3-4 business days for the transfer to go through.

well i dont see the point cuz either you should start at a higher price or let the buyers fight over it themselves, they will pay top dollar if its that desirable
ooh btw, can u have your shipping addy changed? cuz i spose it'd be more convenient to have stuff shipped to my berkeley address...

Oh. He, he -- was trying to sniff out the reserve price on an item.

Oh, well, we didn't win anyway, because the winning bid was at the buying price. We should have done that.

thing about ebay's porn policy is really childish i mean you can't use certain words like hardcore, i mean "cum guzzling slut bitches" i can understand but how's a guy who wants something hard know he's not getting some soft ass playboy stuff?
