Anyways, I've been using it since I got my G5. I like it, but it still wish for more songs.

It's really cool. You create a profile and of course keep a credit card on file - I imagine you can use a debit card but that's ooh scary. You search for the music, in my case I was looking for electroclash, you get to see the songs listed by album and each one has the first 30 seconds as a sample. For the most part you can buy each song individually for $0.99 or the whole album for a certain price. I have yet to buy an entire album so I'm not familiar with the album pricing structure.

The downloads are pretty fast and it's really, really nice to have reliable quality instead of depending on kazaa folks to rip a song properly. itunes give you unlimited burns but gives you limited authorizations. You can authorize up to three machines for any given song and they've even built in some flexibility if you change machines or your system crashes. You just de-authorize the other version and reauthorize somewhere else.

When I'm less lazy I'll find some official info and post it. Apple should be paying me for this.

It's always a good idea to use a credit card as a layer of protection. If someone snags your cc you are usually either fully protected or can at least protest suspicious charges. It's harder to get actual dollars back from the bank once they're gone.

Online porn? Do you know how much money those fuckers make? I was reading this wired article about some porn website that was easily making $300,000. A month.

And I've heard in Europe and Japan, where their cell phones are far more advanced, they already got porn you can download onto your cell phone.

I remember reading about a service that offers that here in the U.S. too, but I don't remember where. I know there are a few programs that allow you to enjoy porn on your palm (as in palm pilot) as well.

Despite being a dedicated and enthusiastic self-flagellist, I can't think of anything dumber than beating off to dirty pics or movies on your cell phone or PDA.

Oh, wait, I can: while in Italy, one of the German TV stations would air late-night commercials for phone-sex lines...that offer dirty chat via SMS.

That struck me as ridiculously stupid.

Depends- if it's a US song, you'd better not download it. You could get slapped with a lawsuit and excessive fines/jailtime by the recording companies trying to make an example out of you. If it's an Asian song, Jpop, Kpop- I'll download it because a) it's impossible to buy b) the barriers to "bring me to justice" are a lot higher and are not worth all that trouble.

If you notice, you can access iTunes from different countries and browse their songs, but you can't buy from them. The day iTunes becomes global, then I'll just hop on over to the iTunes Japan or Korea and buy a few songs then.

I heard the lawsuit is only for the biggest freeloaders........

also, U.S courts has ruled file sharing networks to be legal....I think the music industry is taking the case to the US supreme court.

NOW JUST PICTURE 'EM SINGING IN THE SHOWER ...

by Bruce Kluger and David Slavin

Earlier this week, armchair musicologists across the nation went into overdrive when the media revealed the contents of the presidential iPod. If music does indeed make the man, as experts suggest, the First Playlist tells us that George W. Bush is a down-home country boy (Alan Jackson, George Jones) with a sensitive side (Joni Mitchell) and a hint of naughtiness (the Knack's "My Sharona"). What similar conclusions can we draw from other newsmakers' iPods?

Dick Cheney: "You and Me Against the World"; "Total Eclipse of the Heart"

Donald Rumsfeld: "Rocket Man"; "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word"

Condoleezza Rice: "Hopelessly Devoted to You"

Karl Rove: "Under My Thumb"; "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?"

Alberto Gonzales: "Whip It"

Colin Powell: "Free Bird"

John Bolton: "It's the End of the World as We Know It (and I Feel Fine)"

Jalal Talabani: "I'm Your Puppet"

Mahmoud Abbas: "Don't Fence Me In"

Saddam Hussein: "You Dropped a Bomb on Me"

Kofi Annan: "Won't Get Fooled Again"; "Carry On, Wayward Son"

Bill Clinton: "Sexual Healing"

Al Gore: "March of the Wooden Soldiers"

John Kerry: "I'm a Loser"

Ralph Nader: "Born to Run"

Dennis Hastert: "Our House"

Nancy Pelosi: "Our House"

Tom DeLay: "Burnin' Down the House"

John McCain: "Always True to You in My Fashion"

Zell Miller: "Crazy" (Patsy Cline), "Crazy" (k.d. lang), "Crazy" (Willie Nelson)

Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger: "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes"

Barry Bonds: "Pump It Up"

Bill O'Reilly: "I Just Called to Say I Love You"

Michael Jackson: "The Kids Are Alright"; "Can't Help Myself"

Maria Shriver: "Take This Job and Shove It"

I just picked up a 2G 10 gig ipod, it was a store model @ Good Guys for 109.00 pre-tax. It's nice, the battery problem is overrated. Mine's still going strong for the last 6 hours. The 2G caps @ 8 hours, but I turned off the backlight and turned down the contrast. I think it's going to last 12 hours.

By the way, the ipod came with 7 gigs of music someone loaded in the store and I added my 3 gigs of collection music and now I have a very full ipod.

Any good hacks I can use my ipod with? The problem with the 2G is that it's only firewire so I bought a firewire card, but I would like to do more cool shit with it. Is there any kinds of hacks I should know about?

Has it really made everyone's lives easier in terms of accessing the music they wanna hear? I guess it has, but personally I still like trampin' down to the wrecka stow on foot and buying stuff by hand...I just can't divest my inner Luddite!

Honestly, there's a good library to look at, but there's still a dearth of under the radar stuff (most of which is lightyears better than any mainstream shit out there now) that they'll never get. Rip and dump. What's really fun is meeting people, going over their joint for a shindig or drinkie or whatnot and (with permission, of course) bogarting their music library onto your iPod (if it fits). Then go home and mill thru all the gems you don't have on your HD. Nine times out of ten people have oodles and oodles of jewels you just can't get online and never will. I guess one does what works for 'em.

"wrecka stow." I'm going to steel that term.

iTunes still probably has a better selection of tunes than the best wrecka stow around here.

I was looking at Barnes & Noble (okay, so bad choice) and was actually surprised to see The Chemical Brothers CD's in stock.

But, I'd have to put-in special orders for other Electronic/DnB artists. Who wants to wait? :frown:

Yeah, that bugs me, about iTunes.

By the way, in regards to itunes, they need to offer content @ 192 and 320 kbps. I know it probably won't matter much in terms of the ipod's quality, but if I ever want to drag musack off of it, I would like it to be the best it could possibly be.

They need to start offering unlimited monthly downloads at a set price. I would subscribe to a plan like that.

You're in L.A., right? Aren't there any "alternative" wrecka stows away from the chains out there where you could browse thru and find stuff you've been looking for or even better, come across by accident?

We have a few stows this way and even though it depends on time, place and money, every once in a while they all meet and there'll be just ONE disc left of something you might've missed had you not decided to step in there at that particular moment...some call that "serendipity" and others call it "luck."

Defeats the whole purpose of purchasing through iTunes or online. Might as well get it on CD then. Lemme take a wild guess that that usually occurs when there are only one or two good songs on the entire album.

I still haven't bought anything on iTunes 'cause I don't have an ipod, nor do I care to be strong armed into buying one. Call me stubborn. I have downloaded a few (free) tracks from MusicMatch though. That whole DRM thing is such a weird concept to me. Limited burns, limited copying ability.=P Are iTune songs similarly restricted?

Not like I buy all that many CDs, but it's almost worth it to just buy the full disc just so you have the unhampered ability to do whatever the hell you want to do with it. Hell, just pool resources with your friends to group purchase entire albums on CD.=)

I heard there is a program or shell that you can use with iTunes that'll strip the DRM from (or prevent the appending of DRM to) iTunes downloads. Anyone have any experience with it?

More buzz:

Apple pressured to raise iTunes pricing in 2006 (http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1223)
Saturday, August 6, 2005 * By AppleInsider Staff * Published: 04:00 PM EST

Apple Computer may be forced to raise song prices at several of its popular iTunes music stores next year, according to a report from overseas.

Japan's Nikkei is reporting that record labels have been 'abuzz with talk about Apple's 2006 problem,' referring to the company's licensing renegotiations with record labels scheduled for next year.

Specifically, labels have been pushing Apple to increase its current fixed a-la-carte pricing structure in the US, Canada and Europe, the report states.

It's believed that Apple's two-tiered approach used in the new Japanese iTunes store may foreshadow possible increases, while at the same time bolstering the labels' case for higher pricing.

On the other hand, Apple's lower pricing in Japan has forced some of its main competitors in the region--Sony's Label Gate, Yahoo Japan and Excite--to lower pricing.

Come 2006, Apple's licensing of its FairPlay DRM may also be an issue, as labels have recently begun shipping copy-protected CDs that are not compatible with the popular iPod.
